Have been trying to update virus definitions 180630-4 but it seems to have crashed. Anyone else having the same problem?
That is a very old Virus Definitions update, so I don’t know why you or Avast would be trying to get this.
The current latest VPS version is 180709-0.
Do you have Virus Definitions set to Automatic and the Enable Streaming updates set ?
What is listed in the C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs folder ?
Try an Avast Repair - Control Panel > Programs & Features > Avast > Change - Repair, reboot after the repair.
Program Files says 1807092 stream on 09/07/2018
And yes, set to auto and streaming enabled updates.
It now says 18.5.2342 (18.5.3931.0 rebuild) is the required update.
The Avast screen says the current version installed is 180630-4 installed on 01/07/2018
There is a whole string of updates in C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs folder that are newer than the now requested update.
Im totally confused. Perhaps Avast has been infiltrated !
Might be best to ignore the update perhaps.
The program version (and build number) are completely different to the virus definitions number which is based on the date (year month day - number for that day) and number of VPS updates in that day. It is entirely possible o have an older program version with the latest virus definitions.
Avast should do house keeping in the defs sub folder, retaining the latest VPS version and the previous one (presumably as some sort of fall back), plus the streaming update sub-folders issued after the latest virus definitions update.
Do as suggested and try an Avast Repair and reboot afterwards.
Thanks DavidR
But cant do much with Avast as it continues to say “Setup running” and wont do anything else.
Unfortunately setup isnt running.
Cant even uninstall. Just tells me Setup is already running. Please try to start the setup later.
Even turned off the self defense module but makes no difference.
Hi quickayak,
Suggest a system reboot with your internet connection enabled and on. I’ve seen this issue before:
Reboot straightens things out every time. If you continue to have updating issues, please follow DavidR’s advice followed by yet another reboot. Leave internet on during the reboot if you’ve been disconnecting before.
-Again, try a reboot. (in response to message just posted)
Ahah
I think Avast may have straightened things out remotely.
Got an I/O error message and the PC shut down and rebooted itself.
I now have updated definitions and program I believe.
Many thanks to all involved.
Glad you got it sorted, but:
