virus detected, but trouble finding file.

Avast detects a virus on my computer with the following warning message:

Virus Name: Win32: Trojan gen. {VC}
Filename: C:\Windows\system32?hkntfs.exe
VPS version: 0452-1, 12/22/2004

When I try any of the actions: move to chest, delete, or rename…all i get is the reply that the file cannot be found.

I cannot find this file by manually searching for it. The closest I get is chkntfs.exe. I tried renaming the file, but rebooting windows seems to produce a new file with that name. I figure it must be a vital system folder that cannot be deleted.

Is there a solution to this that someone can direct me to?

Please post a HijackThis log here and let us have a look at it. You can find HijackThis, a HJT log analyzer and much more if you click on the link in my signature.

Also tell us the exact version of the vps you have.

Sorry I’m not familiar with Hijackthis. Do I run it and delete all the process that are supposedly harmful and also those processes that are not needed for boot up of the system?

Fix ALL the things that are reported as bad/harmfull. About the things that are needed is up to you. That is the users choice, if they should stay there or not.
