This virus first reared it’s ugly head after I updated the avast software to the current version. I have Windows 98 SE. I connect to the internet with dial-up. So what happens is I start up Windows and all the programs load. My computer is older than most and I only have 32 MB or RAM so it takes about 1 1/2 minutes to load and that’s even when I cancel the loading. Only 2 programs load at startup too. So after the programs finish loading I try to open avast! and nothing happens. It seems to be loading and when I hit CTRL ALT DELETE it shows the program in that list as “ashavast” I’ll click cancel then hit CTRL ALT DELETE again and it won’t be there. So then I double-clicked on the Spyware program that I have and it brings up the main screen and BOOM whole computer is frozen even the little orange light that signifies that the computer is busy is frozen on. I think this certain virus waits a certain amount of time before freezing the computer. Maybe 2-3 minutes. The reason I tried to open the programs is so that I could try and get rid of it. The first 5 times I tried just not touching the computer through startup and it just froze. The last time my computer worked was right after I updated avast! and I had gotten half way through scanning my computer. It found two viruses and I couldn’t get rid of one because the avast! software was outdated. I had the most recent definitions but not software. So then I click delete on the virus screen. I think the virus was called VBS Maller or something I know that it was in C:/Windows/Temporary Internet Files/ContentIE5/(#'sandletters)/delayed[1].htm I don’t remember the letters and numbers before the actual file that the virus was in. I can’t quite remember it’s name although it was something along the line of Maller. This virus may not even be the same one. But I need a way to get around the virus so I can finish scanning and get rid of it. But since my system freezes after 2-3 minutes after startup. There’s nothing really I can do. I know a good deal about computers but not enough to get around this little bugger. Can someone help me out? Thanks.
Hello SilverKiento and welcome to the forums, Have you tired emptying you temp internet files before the crash? Also, have you tried booting into safe mode and running a scan?
Hi, thanks for the welcome and yes I have tried restarting in safe mode. After exactly 2 minutes the computer froze again. Then I tried to open Spy Sweeper (my new virus program) which was the last thing I had installed before it started acting up. So now I have the suspicion that it may have been the spyware program. Either that or having two spyware scanners on there at once had messed it up somehow, causing it to freeze. I did have 2 spyware programs on my computer. Spydoctor and Spysweeper. I’ll be experimenting with it. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
My suggestion would be , get rid of those so-called spyware detectors, I don’t trust any program that uses spyware to advertise spyware removal. Go with spybot search and destroy or lavasofts adaware.
Yeah… best suggestion I’ll say.
Oh, I’ll add just SpywareBlaster to end the antispy group 8)
