ok so Norton Internet security comes with my laptop, and being that i just had to re-install Windows, due to a rele bad virus and self stupidity, I now have it back. so i promptly installed avast and ran scans as well as Microsoft Security Essentials, and out of nowhere Norton says that some kind of .tmp file in the avast folder has not only a “trojan.Zlob”, but a “Heuristic Virus”…any insight on this?
You have to uninstall Norton again as having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.
What avast folder ?
What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
If it is the avast4 folder, a sub-folder of Temp, that is where avast unpacks file that it is going to scan.
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
sorry my mistake…it norton was simply deleting those items…it was Microsoft Security Essentials. i know this for sure now b/c it just gave me another warning:
Detected items: hackTool:Win32/Pipecmd.B
Alert Level: Medium
Status: Active
Category: ToolDescription: This program has potentially unwanted behavior.
Recommendation: Permit this detected item only if you trust the program or the software publisher.
Microsoft Security Essentials detected programs that may compromise your privacy or damage your computer. You can still access the files that these programs use without removing them (not recommended). To access these files, select the ‘Allow’ action and click ‘Apply actions’. If this option is not available, log on as administrator or ask the local administrator for help.
Items:
file:C:\Windows\Temp_avast4_\unp251594191.tmp
so @ your comment above…its ok? i should just allow it? cuz i don’t want to take any chances…
I would say you need to exclude the C:\Windows\Temp_avast4_\ folder in Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) as it is effectively conflicting with what avast is doing. If MSE allows wildcard use just exclude the .tmp file type or more specifically unp.tmp (where the * asterisk is whatever character they use for a multi character wildcard).
