Virus moved to chest but took my Comcast Toolbar with it

Yep…and I miss it. Can’t see incoming E-Mails anymore.
File Name:ComcastToolbar.exe
FileID:30
Virus:Win32:Adware-Gen [Adw]

Anyway I can remove that from the chest and recover that file? Hate to pay someone to do it for me. I’m no genius when it comes to computers.:frowning:
Thanks,
Dave

Hi. I’m sorry you had that happen. I had something flag one of my innocent toolbars too, and it aggrevated me. So, I just uninstalled/reinstalled the toolbar. I’m pretty sure you could do the same thing with your Comcast toolbar. Good luck.

Thanks shae…I gave it the good ole college try but it would not let me download the new toolbar. Think I’m gonna have to bite the bullet and hire a pro. A lot of what the people with more knowledge than me say here is WAY over my head.
Dave

Hi, myboyrusty, welcome to the forum.
There is a simple procedure, and a fairly complicated procedure. ;D
I’ll post the complicated simple procedure.

Right click the Avast system tray icon, select “updating” then VPS update", and let it update the database. Should take no more than half a minute.

Right click the Avast system tray icon again, select “start Avast antivirus”, wait for the memory test to complete, and the interface will open.

Click on the chest symbol, to open the chest. In the left pane of the chest, make sure you are looking at the “infected” files section.
Locate the entry for the toolbar, right click it, select “rescan”. If it comes up clean, right click it again, select “restore.”
If it is still reported as a virus, right click it again, select “email to Alwil” and fill out the form to report it as a false positive.

It will take a day or two to correct the detection if it is indeed a FP. Rescan it from the chest periodically. When/if it scans clean, restore it, or re-download and install the toolbar. (Preferably the former.)

I’m off to bed, now, but let me know if you’d like the additional, slightly more complicated steps.
Manana.

Thanks manana ALOT…I have 4 viruses in chest
Q.The two adware viruse won’t let me submit a form to AWIL…no form comes up
Q. On the forms that do come up what do I fill in as program publisher?
Q. On the forms that do come up what do I fill in as program version?
Thanks Much,
Dave

My name isn’t Manana. Manana is Spanish for “tommorow”. “Later”.
My name is Tarq, or Tarq57.
Understandable mistake, no big deal.

Now. I don’t know why the form isn’t coming up. What is available in the right-click menu when you right click on a file?
Please post the detection names and original file locations for the two adware files.
And, then, below that, same information for the other 2 files for which you are able to get a “mail to” option appear.

Try highlightint each adware file in turn (by mousing onto it and left clicking) then use the icon near the top left corner of the chest. (See attached picture) Does the form come up then?

The program publisher and version relate to your toolbar. When you installed it, the program publisher and version should have been available. If you don’t have that or can’t remember it, go to the webpage you got it from, and find out.

Sorry Tarq,I wish I knew Spanish. I’ve got good news. When I ran a scan the other day it detected 57 infections. I scanned them and they were all false positives. SO, I rescanned to make sure… then did a restore to every one of them. I did notice that the toolbar virus was back on 11/22/2009…not the scan I did the other day. The good news is that I downloded the comcast toolbar and it worked! I now have the toolbar. Now the computer seems to be working fine. Should I leave well enough alone and just leave those viuses in the chest…forever?
Thanks for the advise…much appreciated. I was almost on the way to the computer store to pay to get the toolbar back.
Thanks,
Dave

Good one.
I’d leave those file in the chest. Anything to do with the toolbar can be deleted from the chest, because you have successfully re-installed it, so it is pointless keeping copies of an original install.
The other files you should rescan periodically. If they rescan clean, a bit of research is indicated before blithely restoring them, such as what process or program did they belong to? Is the file actually required? Does the program it belonged to function OK? Is the program still installed? Is the file really clean?
And that sort of thing.
And that’s what we’re here for. ;D

There is no issue with leaving infected files in the chest as long as you want, it’s just good housekeeping to deal with them from time to time.
A good example is over the past few days, when there was the big FP issue, I’d dislike having to deal with more chest files than necessary during a confusing time, just because I hadn’t cleaned up for a decade.
