What you addresses here has more to be qualified in the realm of adware, browser helper objects, and the occasional trojan dropper.
We live in the days of layered protection now, and everyone has to understand that one anti-virus software solution and a software firewall is not enough to protect a computer that is connected to the Internet. You also need additional programs, like anti-spyware programs (Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster), for the malware you mentioned a tool like Toolbarcop can come in very handy. Actually we are nearing the days that everyone should have a decent anti-trojan program installed (Ewido or a-squared), and the days are nearing that you cannot do without a good System Monitoring Program too.
So what is your message here?
