Virus protection won't turn on?

Hai I hope you guys can help me out.
I recently reformetted and downloaded avast!.
I went to download a screen saver today and it said adware was with it… I cancelled the download, but am doing a virus scan, just to make sure. So far, so good.
I opened the Windows security centre though, and i t says “firewall, automatic updates, and then Virus protection”. Both the firewall and updates are turned on, but the virus protection says it is off… and there is no option below tat says to turn it on…
What do I do to turn it on? Thanks.

Which antivirus did you use before?
Are your system date and time correct?

I use norton before my reformat… but it ran out long before i reformatted. and yes my time and date are fine.

Hmm K… I tried it… but now my newbie butt can’t remember how to open the windows security centre! lol

Start - Control Panel - Security Center (double click)
