Is there a button somewhere in the Avast Menus which allows us to consult the database of viruses currently covered?

Yes, right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, Menu, Virus Database.
Somehow I don’t think it will be much help as there is no standard naming convention for virus names, so what you may be searching for may be called something else.
