virus signatures

All other anti malwares like AVG and Kaspersky proclaim that they have about 2.5 million virus signatures but avast ha only about 0.3 million.Does Avast have low detection rates???

No.

This was discussed a lot in the past…

  1. There are a marketing issue involved. Companies estimate the number of viruses by high.
  2. There are different counts possible: variants, etc.
  3. There is not an international rule for virus naming, so same virus could be consider one or more by other company.
  4. Scanning settings are very important.
  5. Active viruses (ITW) are really more important then the whole number.
  6. Generic signatures and heuristic detections cannot be really counted as ‘virus detection’.

Well, etc. etc.
Trust avast!

I used Avast! and i surf a lot and never had problem. I had Kaspersky and Mcafee in the past that make me to reformat a lot my cpu(computer). So i do recommand Avast! and he dont got low detection. He got really a high detection rate if u want u can look in Malwaretests and AV-Comparative. They give good result and Avast! has success here also. Also you can look Avast! Blog to see his detection in exploit again AVG and Kaspersky which is really amazing. They also attached a proof for you see they dont lie.

Mr.Agent

BTW: For avast5 virus database generator I have also ‘such a big meaningless number’ generated. It says 1.935.218 detections for 090830-00. But this number really says nothing. We sometime ‘reset’ some detections, the number would go down, but the detection capabilities would still be the same.
