Virus through Internet Explorer

I keep getting viruses through my temporary internet files/content.IE5. I run AVAST scan and it finds the infected files and I move it to the chest. I then have to run a schedule boot scan and it finds more files which have been infected. I then log in and the red apples pops up saying windows xp fire wall disabled and then the viruses come through my temporary internet files/content.IE5. Any suggestions?

Hi beatlefanLH,

You need to give your computer a good clean and then install a good firewall. Follow the instructions here:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=24656.msg201975#msg201975

Be sure to download, install and update the programs, then go offline to do the scans: pull the internet connection and don’t plug it back in till you’ve run all the scans and installed the firewall.

You should go to Windows update after that and download all the critical updates. If you need to reboot, go back and check for more updates.

You should be updated to IE7. You could also consider a browser like Opera or Firefox. If you are unable to update from IE5, you should definitely use one of these browsers.

EDIT: I’d also recommend you run CleanUp! before you start scanning to clean out your temp files:

 Hi Beatle :

As Frank has shared here AND in your other thread, the
"temporary internet files/content.IE5" can be the symptom
of a very BAD piece of Spyware on your computer. In such
a situation, I usually recommend using the FREE version
 of "SUPERantispyware" from www.superantispyware.com .
 Regardless of WHICH antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN program(s)
you use, IF they do NOT resolve the "problem", the next
step would be to use the HijackThis program, best
analyzed by volunteer Experts usually found on
 antiSPYWARE Support Forums .

What concerns me more is, if the standard shield can find them in your Temporary Internet files, why were they not detected and stopped by Web Shield ?

What is your operating system ?
What is your firewall ?
Is the Web Shield enabled and scanning content ?

Check these links to test that the web shield is running:

Freewheelin Frank and NickGolovko - thanks. I’m not getting the viruses anymore. I downloaded the Zone Alarm and I’m using that and the Virus problem is fixed.

My next problem is the programs that are loading at startup. It keeps loading My Documents folder and Internet Exporer and Netscape. I don’t want to load those programs at startup. I’m running Windows XP. I only want to run Avast, MSN messenger and the weather channel desktop. Any suggestions?

WinPatrol is a great program in many respects, including its ability to let the user easily control startup items. Here’s a link to the free version

http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

Spybot S&D has a similar function in the advaced mode. Maybe you’ve already downloaded this.

Just be careful you don’t disable any required (or desired) windows components.

Care needs to be taken in both of the above mentioned programs, their control of start-up entries, both at one time or another have stopped ashDisp.exe the avast icon and interface to the on-access scanners and program settings, etc.

I went and downloaded winpatrol and that helped quite a bit. This message board is awesome. I only have 1 more problem. I’ve ran Avast and I’m clean. IE keeps opening up on its own, 1, 2 or more windows. I “x” out of them and then I’m OK. I’d really like to know how to stop this. You guys rock!

Hear Hear to DavidR’s wise comment.

I’m just dreading the next avast software update when all the folks who have taken on board some of the antispyware so freely recommended here (and without too much thought to its configuration) find - yet again - that the avast startup entries have been disallowed.

You may have a browser hijacker/adware, common with IE. If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it.

  1. Ewido, a.k.a. avg anti-spyware If using winXP. or a-Squared free if using win98/ME.
  2. Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition
  3. Spybot Search and Destroy
  4. Spywareblaster Don’t install this until you are clean.
