Hi i’ve got a simple but big trouble, i can’t go on internet. The only site i can go is this www.avast.com. I try everything to scan with all antiviruses i’ve got but seems all ok.
I don’t know what else should i do…???‘’
HELP!? i must format all?!
We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- What was the filename and path where the virus was found?
- Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
You could start by giving us some information beside what Tech has asked for.
What else have you tried ?
Have you deleted any files after a virus scan, etc. recently ?
By the I can’t go to other sites, is this every other site or just security/anti-virus sites ?
If other AV sites then you could have something in your HOSTS file blocking access to these sites, check the C:\Windows\HOSTS file (no file extension/type), you can open it with a text editor like Notepad. If you see lots of URLs for security sites and 127.0.0.1 on the same line that is probably what is blocking it, post some of the examples here.
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.
- Ewido, a.k.a. avg anti-spyware If using winXP. or a-Squared free if using win98/ME.
- Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition
- Spybot Search and Destroy
- Spywareblaster Don’t install this until you are clean.
I wish i could install those programs but like i tell you i can’t use internet explorer or mozilla to go in the web. I don’t know why this is the only site i can go in?!
Anyway i have windows xp service pack2
avast home edition 4.7 with VPS 0644-4.
Have you checked the Hosts file as I suggested ?
i can't use internet explorer or mozilla to go in the web. I don't know why this is the only site i can go in?!What errors are you getting if any ? If no errors it is most likely that the hosts file is the issue.
What is your firewall ?
Try pausing or terminating the Web Shield provider to see if that has any effect ?
Just try this link to see if https gets through https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/extensions/.
Try this slightly different format for the link in 1. above, Ewido http://195.39.104.68/en/download/ and see if that works and allows you access ?
I don’t know why but i can go in both links that you give me, but i can’t even load googles main page it sounds weird cuz’ usually it opens in a second. I have a router firewall but port no. 80 its always open.
I olso notice that i can view more pages but really really slowly.
Instead the page of my provider opens really fast.
Well i don’t know what happened but now seems all ok. Finally i can open google and others. ???virus, spyware, trojan, worm, or network problems, at least know i can check with the links thanks!!!
I suggest you get a firewall to back up the routers firewall as it provides no outbound protection and you should consider a third party firewall.
Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.
- Zone Alarm free http://www.zonelabs.com works fine with avast and has a reasonably friendly user interface. There are others, Comodo, Sunbelt Kerio, Jetico, etc.
See some firewall tests for comparison, some are freeware but many are paid for versions http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.php. Also see http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/firewalls.shtml
I don’t know if i need a software firewall because i heard they’re not real safe, there are many viruses that could bypass a software firewall. At least mine is a hardware firewall, and like i see on the net is either one of the best!!!
It is highly unlikely your hardware firewall provides any outbound protection. A fire door that only prevents/provides protection from one side can’t be called a fire door.
It is your system and entirely your risk, but to say you’ve heard they aren’t safe and they could be bypassed are two poor reasons not to use one at all. Something that even if it were one that may not be safe or may be bypassed is better than NONE.
So if your happy to except this possibility because you have no outbound protection, good luck:

Well, they’re not perfect, but they protect your computer and they’re allow safety. Better having a firewall than no one.
