virus undetected in zip file

hello.

I have been using AVG but heard good things about Avast! Home. So I uninstalled AVG & installed Avast!.

I have a virus that was sent to me - it is I-Worm/Netsky R. It was zipped and sent to my Thunderbird email client. Since I use Thunderbird, it was never activated. I have not (and will not ;D ) unzip the virus.

Just to test out my new Avast! installation, I right clicked on the zip file and scanned. A window came up and ran a test, but then the window automatically closed without saying whether or not Avast detected the known virus. I did this a few times so that I could try to read what it said (very fast closing of the window) - it seems as though the zipped virus was not detected.

I uninstalled Avast! and reinstalled AVG and it quickly detected the virus with a right-click scan.

How come Avast didnt notice (or give me any warning) that there was a virus in this zip file? I think to be able to do this is an important feature of an anti-virus, no?

thank you all for you help

Did you used Mail Protection Wizard before using Mail client? Guess not, because even Home Edition can detect viruses inside ZIp archives that get to you by mail.

No, I never set up the email protection. The zipped virus that I have is something I received a few weeks ago & kept for testing purposes.

bionnaki, re your ‘text was very quick, unabkle to read’.
Did you check the option ’ display result of explorer extension’ in the Menu of the actual avast program?
That way it…euh…displays the results.’
