Virus Win32:Small-CRW[Trj]

I need help removing a virus I just got. I tryed using the removal software Avast offers but it did not recognize any. Can anyone offer any advise?

What do you mean? avast can’t detect it or can’t clean (remove) it?
If avast can’t detect, which antivirus are you using to know you’re infected?
What is the avast error message when you try to clean it?
Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
Any other security programs that could interfere on avast cleaning?

Avast informed me of the above virus and did not remove it so I went to the Avast web site and downloaded and ran the virus removal program they had suggested. The removal program came back as no virus on my system. I then reran Avast deep scan and the results came back that I do have the above virus. As for the error message “Avast has detected a virus Win32:Small-CRW[Trj] what do you want avast to do?” I try to delete it and it keeps looping back with the same message.
I am running Windows XP home for my OS and am up to date.

What reason was given for not being able to remove it, in use, etc. what ?
Deletion isn’t really a good first option (you have none left), ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.

On the page that you downloaded the virus removal program, you should have noticed a list of viruses that it is designed to remove and I doubt yours is on the list being a trojan. So it is only looking for specific infections and not general infections, which the avast program should be able to deal with.

The removal tool is designed to clean files infected by these viruses, which infect other files, the infected element inside the file can be removed. But, in the case of a trojan the complete file is malicious.

If you have XP or Win2k, you could enable a boot time scan. Right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, Menu, ‘Schedule boot-time scan…’ That should be able to deal with in use infections as they won’t be running prior to boot.

What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?

 Hi :

What you have reported is a trojan ( "Trj" ), which is best dealt with using a program that
"specializes" with detecting & quarantining such "things". I recommend using the FREE ver
 of "SUPERantispyware" from www.superantispyware.com AND/OR AVG/Ewido ( pick your
 version ) at www.filehippo.com/download_ewido/ .

The Cleaner tool has a reduced detection hability. It’s done for cleaning not for scanning and for cleaning some kind of infections, not all of them.

The virus is coming back all the time or the file has it access denied to avoid the deletion.
Can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.
