Virus/worm warning

During a period of inactivity on my computer (approx 5-10 minutes) Avast warning appeared

with the following information (Avast also said it had blocked this virus/worm)

http :// sb.google.com/safebrowsing/update?version=goog-white-do

Malware name: VME family

Malware type: Virus/Worm

VPS version 0633-3, 17/08/2006

Do you know anything about this one

Regards Thunder Bird

Well the latest VPS is 0633-4 and it probably was malware as the page in question is no longer found, error 404.

For the future please don’t post live (clickable) links to suspect files to avoid accidental exposure, either break the url with spaced or use the Code tag (hash # icon), e.g.

http :// sb.google.com/safebrowsing/update?version=goog-white-do

http://sb.google.com/safebrowsing/update?version=goog-white-do

It does seem a bit strange that a sub domain of google had an infected file. However, since this seems to be a forum or search redirect, people could have uploaded a suspect file or code that triggered avast.

When I tried to use the link I got the error 404 same as you (This was in minutes of getting the Avast warning) I apologize for posting the link as I did but assumed the link was now defunct.
Is it possible to get some information on what VME is and what problems it can cause ??

The mention of the live link was for the future, even if defunct at the time it could be because the server is down or any number of reasons why the page might not be available at the time.

A google search for +VME Family +worm (with the + plus signs) returns many hits as does Malware name: VME family. http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/find?words=VME&search=Search

I have to admit that I very rarely try to find out what something does, I’m happy that avast has prevented it from being downloaded or activated. I also use Virus Info VGREP Virus Name search and information. We need VGrep because, without the correct name, it may prove very difficult to access accurate information about a virus and its effects. It also provides links to other anti-virus sites information on that alias.

It is a free service but you need to register to be able to use it http://www.virusbtn.com/resources/vgrep/index.xml
