I have a problem: my avast tells me it has blocked a dangerous website/ file:
URL: http:// microsoftntdll.sytes.net/is-ready

Infektion: URL:Mal

Process: C:\windows\sytem32\wscript.exe

I ran a scan of my system (malware Bytes) but it didnt find anything. Now I am wondering if perhaps the problem lies with avast or if there is in deed a threat??
On the Internet I couldnt find anything concerning this problem. And I would be grateful for any help!

Did this happen after you had used a USB ?

Hi essexboy,

thanks for the fast reply. I did indeed use a usb… that i had used in a copy shop the day before… maybe there’s the problem.
I ran the Otl here are the results. Hope there is something to be found that can be removed.

OK we will disinfect the USB first

Download MCShield to your desktop and install
It will initially run a scan and show the result as a toaster by the system clock
Then in the control centre select scanner and tick unhide items on flash drives

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/mcshield%20unhide.JPG

Plug in the drive and McShield will start a scan

Then get the log which will be here :

Start > all programs > MCShield > logs > all scans

And post that

THEN

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Ok.
As I had another usb connected to my pc in the meantime I will post to usb logs.
Here we go.

Pardon me. Of course i meant two.

Both USB’s were infected… I would recommend that you keep MCShield on the system. How is the computer behaving now ?

The computer is beahving as usual. no problems…except of course that avast keeps telling me it has blocked an attack. I will do as you recommend and keep mc shield installed.
Thanks for the fast reply.

One question… if i scan a usb with McShield does that mean after its clean?

Hi essexboy,
I just noticed avast doesn’t show me the attack notice anymore
That’s great!! That means McShield eliminated the virus and my computer is once again “clean”??
So if I keep avast and McShield now and delete the rest e.g. Spyware terminator, McAfee Scanner and Malwarebytes, then the computer is sufficiently guarded? Sorry for my lack of knowledge concerning computers :-[ and thanks a million times for your help!

Yep retain MCShield as that will protect you from USB infections, that along with Avast should stand you in good stead. Maybe keep MBAM and use for a quick scan monthly

In that case methinks I will send you on your merry way

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

Clear Restore Points

Go Start > All Programmes > Accessories > System tools
Right click Disc Cleanup and select run as administrator
When it pops up at the first prompt select OK after it has done some calculations the tabs will appear
Select More Options tab
Press Sytem Restore and Shadow Copies Cleanup button

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
[*]Microsoft Windows Update

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?Keep safe

hey essexboy,
as proposed i waited 24 hours. And avast isn’t telling me anything which in this case is making me very happy. ;D
I will try to follow your instructions and I will definitely try to avoid copyshops!
Anyhow, again thanks to you the lifespan of my laptop has increased yet again.

Just one last minor question: the usbs are free of infection now? or they cannot be cleaned? because mc shield keeps telling me it is infected?

thumbs up for your work here!

In that case I would reformat the USB drives once you have taken what you need from them. MCShield is protecting you for now

Hello!
I am new to this forum and also new to viruses & Co.
I have exactly the same problem: avast keeps popping up with a warning
URL: http:// microsoftntdll.sytes.net/is-ready
Infektion: URL:Mal
Process: C:\windows\sytem32\wscript.exe

Following the suggestions in this thread I have installed MCshield and run it on the USB stick which I used after being to a copy shop and it found it infected. I run Avast on the hard disk, but it did not find anything. I have Windows 7 and I just updated Avast.
If understand right I cannot use the solution with the script in OTL, because it is not a general one.
What should I do?
I’be grateful for any help!
Robi

Could you attach the MCShield log please and …

I attach the log from MCshield (G: was the USB stick) and the two logs from OLT.

Dear Essexboy,
I run OTL and Junkremoval tool. The warning messages from Avast seem to have stopped! Thanks!!!
I attach the two log files.
BTW, what to do with the USB stick? Reformat?
Yesterday I ran MCShield a second time and it said the USB stick was still infected.
Do I have to do anything else?
Thanks again!
Robi

Yes reformat the drives

Any further problems ?
