My Avast! summary page reads, “Avast! service stopped, or is in an inconsistent state.” When I click on Start program, it seems to try to load, but nothing happens. Meanwhile, my computer seems to be be somewhat locked up. It is excruciatingly slow with some tasks, yet there is no hard drive sound coming from the CPU (as was normal before when handling tasks in the background). How can I get Avast started so I can root out the worm or virus or whatever . . . (when I click for a scan in the scan window, it states, “no start or end points are available.”

How do You know You are infected ?
Have you tried avast repair? Go to ad Remove programs, click Remove, scroll down to repair and reboot
Or try Remove with aswclear.exe and reinstall
