Viruschest server not available, RPC communication failed (2147422219)

When I ran the AVAST scan the threat W32:trojan-gen was discovered but I couldn’t remove to chest:

Viruschest server not available, RPC communication failed (2147422219)

I followed the instructions here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
Unfortunately OTL didn’t generated a result.log ppart from the first time when I accidentally ran it without the script.
[suspicious]And aswmbr.exe caused BSODs or aborted because the Avast rootdetection service stopped.
Only after I renamed aswmbr did it run to completation.[/suspicious]

So it looks like the boot root has been infected - is there anything I can do?

and here’s the first extra.log

What was the file name and location of the W32:trojan-gen detection ?

RPC errors are normally associated with the presence of or remnants of another AV.
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

I think it may be a little premature with the logs (but I’m no malware removal specialist) are you experiencing any other malware related symptoms ?

Hi David,
The infection was from a different user - I discovered the exe in that users download folder.
No physical symtons but remotelaunch.lnk (or something like that) was installed on public/desktop.
I renamed the exe file and kept a copy.

When I add a txt file to the chest using the context menu no error appears but the file doesn’t appear in the chest either.

avira had been installed previously and there was probably an anti-virus on the pc when bought it but I can’t remember which it was.

The name of the file and location really help a lot in determining if a detection looks good.
Your friend/colleague could check the offending/suspect file at: VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings here, post the URL in the Address bar of the VT results page. You can’t do this with the file securely in the chest, you need to Open the chest and right click on the file and select ‘Extract’ it to a temporary (not original) location first, see below.

Create a folder called Suspect in the C: drive. Now exclude that folder in the File System Shield, Expert Settings, Exclusions, Add, type (or copy and paste) C:\Suspect*
That will stop the File System Shield scanning any file you put in that folder.

When you identify what AV was previously installed (ensure it was uninstalled) and also see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/, this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc. and run the one applicable to the previous AV.

Ok, I guess there are two issues.

  1. Can’t use the chest feature of Avast, probably because of remnants of old antivir programs left on my pc.
That’s a relief. I was worried that a virus had deactivated this feature to stop it being removed.

  2. The virus that was found on my pc:

Unfortunately I don’t know what to look for to ensure that the pc has not already been infected before I renamed it and moved it to c:\suspect. That is my biggest headache.

Thanks,
Tom

essexboy will have a look at the logs when he arrive ;)

Hi you have Norton and Bullguard (they may be the same) still running on the system. So first we will remove that

Download and run the Norton removal tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us&product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1&lg=en&ct=us

The Log looks OK so lets run a further check on the MBR

[*] Download RogueKiller and save it on your desktop.

NOTE: If using IE8 or better Smartscreen Filter will need to be disabled

[*]Quit all programs
[*]Start RogueKiller.exe.
[*]Wait until Prescan has finished …
[*] Click on Scan

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/RKScan.GIF

[]Wait for the end of the scan.
[
] The report has been created on the desktop.

Many thanks Essexboy,
I do still use a Norton product for storing passwords (not anti-virus) so I didn’t run the removal tool. If the only side-effect is not having Avast chest then I can live with that and I since it’s not anti-virus I’d hope it doesn’t interfere with roguekiller.

Here are the results of the roguekiller scan.

I have found a removal tool for Bullguard, if you could download and run that http://www.bullguard.com/support/product-guides/bullguard-internet-security-guides/uninstall.aspx

Then let me know what problems you are experiencing

I checked the original pc description and bullguard was not part of the delivery so that can be ruled out.

The only problem I have is that aswmbr.exe causes a blue screen of death or aborts because the avira service is disabled u-n-l-e-s-s I rename it it iexplore.exe befor I run it. If I rename it then it works properly.

I thought this might indicate my pc had been infected by the virus that one family member downloaded a few weeks ago.
But that is the only sympton that I have that something might be wrong.

But if I understood right you say that the logs show that my pc is probably virus-free.

I can see no indicators but, I can check deeper for your peace of mind

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

I ran the test and have uploaded the log.
I haven’t noticed anything strange since running it… I haven’t yet run the awsmbr again… I’ll try that tomorrow.

Nothing of import was removed by combofix and all drivers look good

Many thanks Essexboy … sigh of relief … made me aware it’s high time to upgrade my avast from the free version.

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems
