Viruses and Scanning

The free home edition avast antivirus program on my friend’s computer has stopped working. She can no longer scan her local drive. I’m helping her with this problem. The problem began when her computer got infected with three trojan viruses, so I removed them. Part of the process included the deletion and reinstallation of Microsoft IE and ME setup files. I’m not a “techie” person, but I managed to help her with the problem. But, after removing the viruses and reinstalling Internet Explorer and the ME system, three messages appeared when I clicked on the avast icon to scan her local drive. I’m not able to even go through the memory testing aspect at all. But, here are the three error messages. First message, “Storage cannot be created for the “Splash” task.” Second message, “Configuration is not loaded properly. Error: dbsCreateObject.” Third message, “Program cannot save parameters to the storage. Error: dbsCreateObject.” I uninstalled avast, then downloaded the entire program again, and still the above messages appear. I went through the repair aspect, but that didn’t help. I noticed at the bottom right hand corner of the monitor screen near the “time clock” on the task bar, the "blue avast ball has a little red circle with a red backward slash that’s located in the lower “left corner” of the avast icon. The red circle with the red dash wasn’t there before. I right clicked on the avast icon, and selected program settings to see if I could fix the problem, but the program setting feature is inactive. The interesting thing is that after connecting to the internet, I still received audio message and blue screen from avast indiccating that avast has successfully updated the program, but I still cannot scan. The computer I’m using is a PC, running on ME. I’m not using any other antivirus program. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the free home edition twice, but I cannot do any scanning. Does anyone know, first of all, what the red circle with the red backward slash is all about; second, and more importantly, how to find solutions to the three error messages that I’ve mentioned above, and finally, how to fix the problem so my friend can scan again. The scanning has not worked for a week now. I have posted this problem in another area, but no one so far has been able to find a solution. I’ve followed their suggestions, but none have remedied the problem. Can anyone tackle this problem? Thanks, Megaman

There is no point in creating another thread for what you are already receiving help for in another thread. It doesn’t get you faster help just causes confusion and duplication of effort for those who are helping and if you give up on them, should they continue to expend their time to help.

As I have mentioned in the other thread, you can uninstall an install (or repair) forever, but if the underlying problem is still there it won’t have any effect.

Note, large block of text without any white space, blank lines is very hard to read.

If you encounter this error while starting avast! antivirus:
Error: dbsCreatObject

Or, if you are using the latest version (4.6.731), just right click the avast tray icon, select Program Settings, switch to the Troubleshooting page and check the “Use XML Storage” box. Boot.

Tech, you have told him this in one of his other two threads (on the same topic) already and he can’t get to the troubleshooting page!

The only reason why I posted in the other forums was to get different tech people to help me with the problem. I figured if other people could see my problem, then the different tech people would send me information that’s different from what I’ve already received, or they may present the information in a way that I’d be able to understand. I didn’t realize the “large block text without any white spaces” was hard to read. I’ll try to be more aware of that. Thanks, Megaman

Ok, no need to be upset. Just that this is not necessary. A lot of people see the same thread and try to help 8)
