How the AV companies choose the name for the virus? Why there are diferent names for the same virus amongs AV companies?
There is no virus naming convention, central database or standards so AV companies are free to name as they wish.
Since AV companies or for the most part commercial companies if they released a name for a new virus, they would also have to release the virus signature so that other companies if they find that signature they would have to call it by the same name.
This would in effect reduce their corporate advantage in being better at detecting viruses as a competing AV company would only need to wait the notification of a new virus name and associated signature and add it to their definitions.
Somehow or other I can’t see this kind of co-operation between companies when some companies spend huge sums of money in detection and development.
There isn’t an international convention for virus names.
Some ‘translation’ list of virus names you can find here: http://www.virusbtn.com/resources/vgrep/index.xml
Unfortunately there is a delay from a new virus being detected to being included in this database.
You also have to register to use VGREP now.
