Vista 64 0xC004D401 Error

After installing avast 6 on a fresh install of vista 64, the computer wont even load into windows. I get a 0xC004D401 error. I’ve searched and tried various solutions, but nothing has worked.

I reinstalled windows again and avoiding avast 6. Is there are fix for this problem or a link to download a previous version?

Thanks.

Fresh install but with any previous antivirus? OEM?
It’s not a good idea to downgrade… Anyway, I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Stay off-line (not connected to Internet)
  6. Install again the old version: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
  7. Boot.
  8. Register avast (insert the registration key).
  9. Uncheck the programs updates (set to manual).
  10. Only then connect to Internet (go on-line).
  11. Check and post the results.

I don’t like downgrading either. I did a fresh install of avast 6 on a fresh install of vista 64 (nothing installed other than os) twice before I figured out it was avast. Once I did, I tried changing settings, searching, etc. to no effect.

Until then, i’ll use an older version 5.1.889.

Well for this to get sorted out/fixed, avast would need a memory dump of the crash. They cannot fix an issue if the cause for it is unknown.

I had the same problem. I just paid $70 for Avast Internet Security, and had to uninstall it because it made unauthorized changes to my system that caused Windows to not function properly. I was getting the same 0xC004D401 error. Any fix for this?

Read the post right above yours. Thanks.

wtf!
Same error

I had
3 y.o. vista64 w/o any troubles
free avast ver.5 w/o any troubles (and I liked it)

After the installation of free avast 6/0/1125 now I receive this error message.
I guess it is a common problem of Your new version with Vista64
Hope You’ll solve this problem soon

It is a very common problem.
There’s a sticky over there at microsoft support forums:

Yep - and they still keep rolling in, despite Avast’s denial of any problem

Hi all,

I am sorry about hearing this problems, unfortunately we are unable to reproduce this issue in our QA lab. Please, could it possible to ask anyone of you with this issue for remote desktop session to your computer so our developers could look on it and fix it?

thank you very much,

I am having the exact same problem:

I update Avast from version 5.0.677 from within the program 1 day ago. After 2 reboots I get this message.

I have a Vista x32 machine.

I cannot uninstall from Control Panel bc it is blocked due to the problem. I cannot do a system restore to a point 2 days ago before I update Avast (program version).

What am I supposed to do: please help!

Use avast uninstall utility :http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
If it doesn’t run, use it in safe mode.

You may or may not install avast again.

If you do update to vista sp2 (before reinstallation) and the problem will go away on surface. Microsoft’s diagnostic tools will still show errors that keep updating though.

I had the exact same problem, nothing that I was directed to do by hp(the company I bought the machine from) worked, this included 3 send ins(for diagnostics) one of which replaced a faulty harddrive, and no that did not resolve the issue, plus numerous user end solutions which failed to produce the desired result.

I have been a 2 year long advocate of this program… ultimately I was forced to switch antivirus brands, because of this problem.

and there is a problem, because several people I know who have the same edition of windows vista(64bit) have reported the same issue to me.

Was is the same error code?
This bug, which existed only on Vista x64 SP0 or SP1, was already fixed in avast (or in Vista x64 SP2). Did they really use the latest avast version?

6.0.1367 Avast! Free Antivirus
X64-järjestelmien Windows Vista Service Pack1 (KB936330)

I installed the Windows Vista 64-bit with Service Pack 1 (SP1) installation took a really long time. (4 hour)
When the machine was ready I got a message “Windows is the product of an unauthorized change.”
Now it seems that SP1 is not installed, removed during restart.

The same is in Finnish.

Minä asensin Windows Vista 64-bit Service Pack 1 (SP1) asennus kesti tosi kauan. (4 tuntia)
Kun kone oli valmis sain ilmoituksen “Tuotteeseen Windows on tehty luvaton muutos.”
Nyt näyttää että SP1 ei ole asennettuna, poistunut uudelleen käynnistyksen yhteydessä.

Sama suomeksi.

Please update your Vista to SP2.

Hmm… how I can skip over SP1? I think I need update first SP1 before SP2.
I think I must remove Avast before I try update SP1 and then SP2?

  1. You can’t.
  2. Right.
  3. Do so, if needed.
