After doing thorough research I have found that the issue is caused by Avast and specifically its caused by the auto update shield. If disabled this issue goes away completely. My question is why is Avast not making users aware of this issue? A quick google search discovers many many users who are stuck with this issue. Also checking the Microsoft pages they say that Avast are aware of this issue but deny it has anything to do with them.
Well Avast I am pretty sure that if I can run the tests on my own PC to discover this is in fact your problem then your technicians should be smart enough to also figure this out. What hope is there for you to detect the latest threats and issues if you are unable to work out what your own software is doing?
I have every intention of buying the latest Avast and using it as my main virus program on my new build due to my past record of using the product successfully. However unless this issue is resolved I will look elsewhere. Cant use something that breaks the system now can I
Running Vista 64bit SP2
Disabling Avast Auto Update shield fixes this issue.
Or Disable Avast completely also fixes this issue.
Removing the program completely forever will also permanently fix this issue
And on a side note many people advice to update Vista to SP2 will fix this issue. That however has not worked besides the point that Avast themselves state in there support center and I qoute
The supported operating systems for avast! Internet Security 6.x, avast! Pro Antivirus 6.x and avast! Free Antivirus 6.x are Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit) or Microsoft Windows 7 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit).
No mention of any Service pack requirements for vista
Already checked those threads and while there are a lot there are no fixes given. It is said in many that version 6.0.1203 has supposedly fixed this problem however I am using 6.0.1367 and the issue still persists unfortunately.
Like I say I have narrowed the issue down to the auto update of avast itself. Disabling this permanently makes the issue go away. I’m guessing the auto update part of avast touches some part of windows that it really shouldn’t be doing or that windows really does not like. Either way I would like to know if there is anything we can work out to fix this issue.
I currently have Avast completely disabled so i can restart my PC without any issues
No intentions of moving to windows 7 I really do not like the OS and with Windows 8 not far away its a pretty pointless move
I was hoping to find a fix for this issue so I could purchase the latest Avast software knowing it would work fine I am hoping this is still possible to do.
