Vista 64bit won't boot SafeMode stops at aswrvrt.sys

I have a Dell XPS 430 with Vista 64 bit installed. When it boots up it shows the POST then the Windows loading bar then a blank screen. No mouse. No desktop. Nothing.

When I try booting in Safe Mode it stops at aswRvrt.sys.

Update to my situation. I found the original boot disk and managed to do a system restore. I then performed a quick scan followed by a boot scan and Avast found nothing.

I’m hoping my problem is resolved but I’m curious what may have caused it to begin with.
