i get a message saying - these startup programs are causing windows to start slowly

name: Avast! antivirus service
filename: ashserv.exe
publisher: awil software
date reported: “current day and time”
time taken: 16.4 seconds

(16.4 does not sound slow when you have a quad core system but non the less an issue!)

i get the options help remove from list ok

upon looking in the event viewer i get this message from the offending error

the help service in vista is not helpful in what the corrective action should be and im not so sure if i should take the item out of startup

maybe its something Avast will look into and fix???

any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Well avast is trying to get its services loaded as quickly as possible to provide protection and it may even get in before some windows services, it is probably this that is generating that report/information.

ashServ.exe is the main scanning engine of avast, so an essential service.

This is a recent development for avast and I would say unless it is a problem for you to leave things as they are.

If you feel this is a problem, you could also check the avast Program Settings, Troubleshooting and check the arrowed option (see image).

thank you for your speedy reply

it is not a problem for me at all… 16 seconds is nothing and i don’t even notice it at all…however for those that have low spec pc’s running vista then this could be a problem
i just saw it whilst trying to brush up on my understanding of vista and also thought that it would be helpful for you guys at avast to get a better understanding and help to improve future releases of avast and other software you may develop

every question answered for me is a leap forward for my understanding of vista in hope that 1 day i may become a computer technition

No problem, welcome to the forums.

I would class my system as no speed freak but certainly not under powered but with XP Pro (not Vista) it is about 1 minute from boot until every thing is loaded including my security apps and no activity.

:o OMG 1 minute :o … thats like forever  ;D

how do you cope?

i have always liked a fast booting systems and I’m starting to think 16 seconds is slow ;D

i could never go back to a 1 minute boot

Skite!

Easy, patience ;D I start my system, start some other stuff (feed the birds), logon, even though I’m the only user, old habits die hard I always logon with a password. Do some more stuff (finish feeding the birds) and then I’m ready and so is my system. Since I only switch my system on once a day 1 minute isn’t a bind (for me).
