I would like to try ‘free’ Outpost, but before I even start, let me ask you this: is it better to have one of top free HIPS firewalls (Outpost, Comodo, OnlineArmour, PCTools,…btw does ZA has HIPS?), or just to upgrade it to Vista firewall + ?

Vista Firewall plus what ?
By default the Vista Firewall has outbound checking disabled - You could also enable the outbound protection of the Vista firewall, but it isn’t very friendly, is rule based and you have to create the rules.

Vista, I’m avoiding like the plague, it holds nothing for me that XP Pro doesn’t and certainly nothing I need.
HIPS has been in my opinion over-hyped as the be all and end all of security which really it isn’t. I got by without it for many years and my firewall has had it for many years, but it doesn’t make a big deal about it.
You only need look at my signature to see which I would choose and I have a paid firewall version, the free version is still very good and relatively unobtrusive.

ZA Free doesn’t have hips, but ZA Pro does.
I don’t have Vista, but if I did I would try Vista Firewall Control with outbound enabled and Online Armor. One at a time, please. ;D Go with the one that works best for you. 8)
