I live in non-English speaking part of Europe and want to buy a Dell desktop with English OS. What Dell rep tells me is that their machines being sold in the country is not compatible (something I don’t understand but I have to believe him) with English version of Vista Home Premium.
He will offer me English version of Vista Business which is superior to Home Premium. He further tells me that I can do every thing with Vista Business that I can do with Home Premium. I am a home user only.
I have little experience with Vista and would like to know if his contention is correct.
I would say that is rubbish and the problem is more related to the fact that it is easiest for Dell to build systems and use a disk copying tool to place an image on the new hard disk that is set-up for that Dell system so it will run out-of-the-box.
So that would almost certainly include Windows OS for your language with all the Regional/Language Keyboard settings, etc. If they were to build a system that had the English version of the OS then they would have to do a custom installation and that would take them more time.
I would most certainly doubt that Vista Business is Superior to Home Premium or can do everything that Home Premium can do as they are designed to meet different needs. The Home one would most likely have functionality that is common in home use but not in business use, media center for instance.
And don’t forget about the difference in pricing as well… I am sure there is some price difference. Dell, of course wants to sell more expensive things. I personally wouldn’t ever buy anything from Dell. Real problems will start to show up once you start experiencing some problems with your system (God forbid, but that’s reality, computers do break). You’ll see that once you have to call their technical support and ask for help… sure they will help you, but sometimes it costs two times more than what you paid for your new system… money, your time spent on the phoen with their “technicians”, nerves lost etc.
Another thing… your English language seems great, why don’t you use English version of Windows and go with the version of the OS that sounds best for your needs ?
Dell is most likely just not wanting to go through the trouble of setting up an English install, if I were you I would tell the rep that you refuse to purchase a Dell if they will not give you the version you want in the language you want. If they refuse try another manufacturer.
Thanx to everyone who responded. The real problem is that they don’t have the license to sell English version of Vista Home Premium on computers in the country. This sounds funny but their Market Chief has to say so.
I agree with SasH that their services are not that good but they are a bit cheaper as compared to the market. In big stores, I didn’t find a computer with “Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6750-processor (2,66 GHz, 1333 MHz, 4 MB cache)” or “Intel® Viiv™-teknik - Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6750-processor (2,66 GHz)” here. That is why I thought to go in for Dell.
The only solution for me is to buy an English edition of Vista Home Premium and install myself when I get the box. Majority of vendors here also don’t offer English OS. It is only HP and Fujitsu Siemens who offer English OS. The computers available in stores are loaded with lots of craps.
