Vista install problem

Had Avast installed under XP. Just upgraded to Vista 32bit and Avast says new operating system installed, must reinstall Avast. I uninstalled Avast and tried reinstalling, but now I just keep getting the same message. Any ideas on how to make this work?

Which one?

Indeed, all the drivers for avast to work are different… you shouldn’t have uninstalled it before upgrading to Vista.
Maybe:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again.

Tried that and it still doesn’t work. Here is the message I keep getting.

“You have upgraded your operating system. Current installation of Avast cannot run on this operating system. The Avast antivirus system needs to be reinstalled.”

I did not uninstall before upgrading to Vista. I only tried to uninstall after installing Avast again and still having no luck making it work.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD so you can find it later.

Are you getting any errors when you try to uninstall avast ?

You say you are having no luck, but we need information, what have you tried what have been the results ?

If add remove programs can’t uninstall avast, run the utility and reboot. Now install avast and reboot.

After trying everything again. I think I got it to work this time. Thanks everyone for your help.

I’m at a loss as to what it might be and I have no experience of Vista, so I don’t know if this is something specific to Vista, I certainly haven’t heard of it in the forums before (the uninstall not working and reporting you need to reinstall)

All I can suggest is were you running the uninstall utility from the same user account you installed it from and did that have administrative rights ?
If not try running the aswclear.exe as the administrator.
Do you have any other security software that might be protecting against system changes ?

Sorry I’m just about to call it a night.

I’m having the same problem. I have a fresh version of Vista installed. I tried what you said above. I unstalled completely using the uninstaller, reinstalled, with/without Administrator privilages…I tried all combinations. I am still getting the same error as above.

Any ideas?

Organized-Mayhem, can I ask what you did exactly to resolve the problem?

I’ve been trying all sorts of things nothing is working.

Which errors? Can you post a screenshot?
To know how to post a screenshot, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0
You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).
