Look at the first entry. Support for EFI. Now that is a great feature. EFI is what Intel designed to replace the very very very very old BIOS. EFI is what Apple is using on their Intel Macs.
WOW, 450MB download size for the standalone installer !!! Now that’s ALOT of code change. :o
I would like to hear comments from those of you that have been claiming how Vista works perfectly and has no issues at all, just go trough the whole page and read how MS admits all those issues with Vista.
Apart from slow file copy i haven’t noticed any other issues… Yes, Vista was well coded.
I see, no other issues huh ? :![]()
Agreed RejZoR, A few minor issues but that’s all.
Hello marc57 !
Yes i believe that for YOU, all those issues weren’t a big deal but to me those issues were driving me nuts. I’m not saying here i hate Vista or that it is a bad operating system because i really don’t believe that. Even with all the issues it’s still a nice OS and i wouldn’t go back to XP no matter what. But i am very happy that SP1 is coming out and fixing all those issues with Vista, but i still cannot say A few minor issues but that’s all simply because some issues were a big deal to me.
Issues that i’ve noticed myself with Vista:
- the performance of browsing network file shares
- the speed of adding and extracting files to and from a compressed (zipped) folder
- the speed of moving a directory with many files underneath
- copying files after deleting a different set of files can make the copy operation take longer than needed
- the copy progress estimation when copying files within Windows Explorer
- the time to read large images
I also find the below quoted text very interesting:
With SP1, Windows Vista will report the amount of system memory installed rather than report the amount of system memory available to the OS. Therefore 32-bit systems equipped with 4GB of RAM will report all 4GB in many places throughout the OS, such as the System Control Panel. However, this behavior is dependent on having a compatible BIOS, so not all users may notice this change.
This doesn’t really bother me as i know it is a 32bit issue but it would still be nice if all of my ram would be shown in Control Panel. Don’t know why but it would make me feel better. ;D
For me Vista is a nice OS but its like going from Tiger to Leopard its nice but you can easily live without it. Vista (much like leopard) just has lots of little enhancements that I think are well worth the upgrade price. If SP1 can fix the performance issues I can see man people finally letting go of XP.
For example:
I do like vista’s disk formatting capability via the System Management Console, it works very well (even better than Mac OS X’s Disk Utility).
Also Microsoft scheduling Automatic Disk Defrag by default was a great idea as most users never defragmented their Disk.
Windows Defender, while definitely not the best antispyware program, is a great addition since lots of users dont even know what spyware is much less how to defend against it.
Improved use of Multi-Core and Hyperthreading systems is good too
Plus lots of other little changes. I just hope that this new Service pack fixes the performance issues may people like Sasha and Darth_Mikey have experienced.
Thanks for the link, good to know real world performance has improved
Hey Darth_Mikey, Sorry to hear about your problems. I know there are problems with Vista that are driving people nuts, but not a real problem for me. I was on the other end of this back in the M.E. days. While M.E. drove me NUTS, quite a few of my friends couldn’t understand as they weren’t having problems.
I’m really hoping SP1 takes care of most of Vista’s problems ;D ;D
The file copy problem was the most noticeable one. They also added few features for defragmenter so now you can even set what drives you want to defragment (also for scheduler).
The file copy performance was really annoying but from what i read so far it seems like they really have improved it with SP1. I’m pretty anxious to try SP1. Just hope i’m not disappointed but i have a feeling i won’t be.

Hey guys !
Just wanted to say, i installed SP1 2 days ago and i must say i am really satisified so far. My usb key finally works at full speed, copying from my digital camera is also significantly faster, in general anything related to file copying is faster. My ram size is also correctly shown in control panel, network shares are also faster. I still need to do a bit more testing but as far as i have been able to tell most of the issues that annoyed me before are now fixed with SP1 ! ![]()
Mikey,
I’ve had the same experience and am also very happy that I jumped the gun
on upgrading. ![]()

where are you guys finding the download for SP!? I cant find it anywhere everything says mid march
Got it installed and network performance is back in line with My other Machines on the network.
Vista was about 5-6MB/sec on a 100Mb network
Vista SP1 is getting 9.95-9.99MB/sec on the same 100Mb network (files being copied from a older Machine Running Mac OS 10.4.11 that I use as a file server)
Not much difference on speed but I guess thats due to the older Hardware (P4HT based system) have to load it on My Mac Mini to see if having a true Dual Core system makes a difference
Hey Mac !
Yes it feels a bit sluggish immediatly after install but give it a few days and it’ll be back to it’s responsivness. Quote from MS:
The Windows Vista SP1 install process clears the user-specific data that is used by Windows to optimize performance, which may make the system feel less responsive immediately after install. As the customer uses their SP1 PC, the system will be retrained over the course of a few hours or days and will return to the previous level of responsiveness.
BTW how long did it take to complete the install on your p4 system ? It was done in just under 30 minutes on my machine …
Around 35 minutes for my system
