Vista SP2 & Avast

Recently I had to go thru Microsoft in order to download SP2. I followed the steps to rename repository folder - “cmd” enter, “cmd.exe”, net stop winmgnt, cd/d%windir%/system32/wbern/ren repository repository.old, net start winmgnt, restart computer and try to install sp2 again. I was successful at installing SP2 to windows vista, but I lost all restoration points and my computer keeps telling me I do not have an anivirus (avast) on my system. I uninstalled Avast and reinstalled but the computer still says not protected. The Avast icon does show that it is protecting my system. Now when my system shuts down (sleep) overnight and I hit “space” bar to power up I hear an awful grinding noise and have to shut off system and restart. Tried a boot Avast action which came up with " System app 1600 - auto rootkit scan was not started as it didn’t complete last run successfully.

Also rec’d following codes same day: system APP 1704, Descr" AAVIM - initialization error AV Aavmstart
and
under Warning: App 1794 AswServ: Aavmstart error.

Should I be worried. Is there a special way I should uninstall Avast and then reinstall to see if all is back to normal?

Does this make sense?

Thanks, Donalda

P>S. I currently have windows defender on system and windows firewall Do I need to add a Malware in addition to avast and windows defender?

It’s a well known issue while installing SP2 on Vista.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning. Boot.
  6. Check and post the results.

Thank you. Boot scan completed. Says all is ok. Appreciate your time
