Hi Bob,
Thank you for your reply.
I went to the link, but my computer’s CD drive is not working.
Is there a way to work around it?
many thanks.
I’ve alerted essexboy please be patient and he’ll be with you as soon as he can.
I’m sure there’s an alternative using a USB device instead of a CD.
Is this a 32 or 64bit version of vista
It turned out that my cd drive just doesn’t work on some CDs. I’ve put the Vista’s CD in and restore the system. Things seems fine now. Hopefully it’ll continue to be so. Thank you so much for your help.

Do you backup an image of your PC offline (ie. to USB HDD) ?
The System Restore saved you but a deeper fallback is HDD image…not just for the above but if/when your HDD fails (#1 hardware failure in PCs).
There are tons of imaging software out there…many are big $$$ and overkill for personal PC use.
I would suggest Macrium…Free version.

Now is the time to think about this…may save an O/S re-install or loss of important data.
Personally, I run a nightly image of all my home PCs why everyone is asleep…you can schedule on each PC…very easy.
Anyway, glad your Sys Restore worked…does not always work.
With regards to macrium reflect, I have a small tutorial here http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/345434-macrium-reflect-imaging-tool/
