Visthupd.exe has no program to associate with for performing this action

This is my third install of Avast!4.7, and it will finally allow me to do email and browse- Symantec trial software was interfering- I uninstalled it. But I still can't get updates or place my product key because when I press either button I get the "no program to associate with the files for performing this action" message. It says to create an association using the Set Associations control panel... I've yet to find such a panel or anything like it. And when trying the set default programs, exe files are not listed for making such a default program choice for these files: :-\(visthupd.exe &visthlic.exe) Vista surely isn't so hard to get along with that so many programs refuse to play nice.?
I'd really like to have an antivirus again... thanks for any help.
  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.
  3. Install avast! from the scratch:
  4. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first. Boot.
  5. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation. Boot.
  6. Install again the last version. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.
Thanks, I'll try when I get time and let you know!
Nope, did all the things you suggested and still it gives the same message... the avast! I uninstalled awhile ago had just given me the audible message that it was up to date- apparently the auto-update works, so I'll let it do it again; but I can't do the license key thing. Any more ideas? Ain't Vista cool :-X!? Thanks again for your help.

You can add your key from the ‘a’ blue icon or you can run ashSimp2.exe and add the key in the Context Menu > About dialog, can’t you?

Nope- that's the reason I got into this forum. Usually I can wade thru the idiosyncrasies of all this computer stuff with plain ole tenacity, but this one has me stumped. I thought an executable file was just handled- period, but licensing or updating thru these icons leads to the message stated in the subject of this post- even after following your advice. Automatic update must be working, however, since while I started this reply, a bubble rose above the icons informing me that the database is now up to date.
Is there a way Avast! can do a system "scan" for viruses in the way that Norton or AVG can? I have yet to find out how from my checking out the program. I had used AVG for years until my last update caused havoc with my using internet on this computer. Had I known Vista would give this much trouble I would not have purchased this computer. (at the time I thought all new pcs were sold with only Vista) Thanks again for your time in getting back to me. All advice is appreciated.

Sure, you can select the areas where avast should scan or scan all the hard disks. There are buttons on the skin that shows these possibilities.

Please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

     I'll try!

By the way, there are no "scan" buttons or drive choices, etc. on the stuff shown with the program- maybe it's not all here.? Actually when I push the button to "start Avast! antivirus", nothing happens.

Hmmm… problems with the skin?
Can you try running ashSimp2.exe from avast folder?

Yay! Thanks a lot for your help! I clicked on ashavast application in the avast! folder and first the "enter License Key" popped up, so I entered it and then the cool skin popped up- I got to scan my computer and also was able to do a manual update! Ha! I love being able to overcome these computer problems! I made a shortcut on my desktop and now It's all cool! Thanks again ;D

Most probably this is what was blocking the first time.
Glad that everything is fine now.
