Hey there.
I recently bought a new webcam, though as it turned out the driver installation on the cd puts a file called vm_sti.exe in the WINDOWS folder, which after a short while starts causing a lot of trouble.
Apart from the symptoms described by others (see the link above) - ie it starts taking up 100% CPU resources so the machine slows down, and it’s not possible to perform online virus scanning - (in stead I could see from the firewall log that the machine started downloading a lot of data from some other server where it was definately NOT supposed to download anything from) - I also found out from the firewall trafic log that the firewall was blocking the AVAST updater, even though it looked in the applications menu like it was allowing it.
-The troublesom webcam driver can be downloaded at: http://download.sandberg.it/support/webcam/13331_drv_all_dec_04.exe
The info on vm_sti.exe I’ve been able to find on the web - apart from people’s experiences with it as stated on the page I link to above - is sparse and can be generalized into most pages simply asuming it is safe, since they don’t have any evidence to the contrary…
-And since AVAST didn’t detect it when it came in either, I take it that the Avast crew simply haven’t been made aware of this file yet.
And so I’d like to raise the awareness.
Apart from that: If a newer AVAST update has taken this malware into account I’d really like to know about it, because until then (obviously - last time I had to wipe the HD with DBAN to get rid of it) I don’t want to install the webcam driver on my PC again - meaning I can’t use my webcam.
So if and when the latest AVAST update can get rid of the malware and repair the webcam driver I hope someone will let me know…
Or if someone knows of an alternative webcam driver that’ll work in stead.
Thanx in advance.
