Whichever server is selected, the VPN connection fails because the VPN server did not respond. This is during my trial period.

Can you please create a support package and open a support ticket? You can create the support package to opening the Avast Mac Security app, then going to Help, Support, Generate Support Package. Then please include the package in the support ticket.
