VPN will not work with Mac

I’ve searched and searched. I can’t find this issue on these boards anywhere. I have a MacBookPro. Standalone VPN will not work. States I’m connected to a hotspot and I’m not. Also, I get a connection error. See attached pic. ANY help would be great.

I have. I even called Avast. They advised me to purchase their support package for 179.00. I’m not sure why I need to pay nearly 200. bucks to get their product (I purchased) to work with my Mac. So, no big deal. I’ll uninstall and go with a company that can provide me with a working VPN. Thanks
