Error 5 is access denied… are you logged as an administrator or a common user?
Which is your operational system?
Did you have any other antivirus in this computer?

log on as common user
the operational system is win xp professional
avast is the only antivirus program in my PC

You shouldn’t need to download the full VPS update file, unless your system is off-line and you are downloading using another computer to get it and transfer to off-line computer ?

You should be able to get auto updates or do a manual update, right click the avast ‘a’ icon, select Updating, iAVS Update. These only download the updates you missed since the last update. So are you experiencing problems/errors with these as well ?

As a common user I don’t know if you can update in this way, try running it as the administrator, right click on the file, select Run As, from the pop-up window select the Administrator account, enter the password and that should get round any permissions. See example image.

No response when right click the avast updating → iAVS update
i cannot run the file in administator mode, no “run as” in the pull down menu after right click the file

Check the avast log viewer (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashLogV.exe), Error or Warning sections relating to the Updates ?

Try logging on to an account with Administrator privileges (if you have access to one) and run the file from that account.

Though not getting a response when right click the avast updating → iAVS update would indicate there is something else wrong with your installation as you should at the very least get pop-up starting the update check, see image, or get an error if say a firewall blocked it etc.

So whilst logged on to an account with administrator privileges try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Try to update your version of avast to the newest.

pls see the error log as attached

cannot add/remove avase…

Well there is nothing recent in those entries and none of the top three relate to problems updating, but general scanning errors.

Anything in the Warning log ?

Have you tried as suggested logging on as a user with administrator privileges for the update ?

since there’s a OnLineGames hit, i guess it could be related to this http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=39831.msg333870#msg333870
