By the way your registration for technical support (the 6 letter symbols is not working. I tried Opera 9.5 and IE Beta 8 but still does not work!!!)
First do a program update through right-clicking the ball in the tray (it is now v. 4.8.1229)
Then, update your VPS
Before, register http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php or you can get it by right-clicking the ball and click “about Avast” and expand “technical support”. You’ll get an email, copy and paste it where it belongs in the about avast I was speaking about. 8)
If you check the original post, GUITARMANONTHE is trying the manual update and it is failing, so can’t update through the normal channels.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
It would probably be best to first downloading the latest version of avast from the web site, http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Important before going through this to confirm that your registration is in date, right click the avast ‘a’ icon, select about avast, check the Updates expiration: date if that is out of date you will need to re-register as has been suggested.
Thanks…you got my point. What I did was uninstall AVAST4.8 using ASW uninstaller, I followed the intructions…login safe mode and run the unistaller…I then reintalled it…but still the error I mentioned above is persistent…I don’t have problems with the previous version…I hope we can solve this problem…thanks for your help…

I think you are unable to enter the activation licence correctly. You must highlight it and copy-paste. You won’t be able to update if you’re not registered. But then, if you downloaded a brand new setup file and also the uninstall utility from avast here http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html and followed the instruction, then upon rebooting, installing a brand new copy and rebooting, you should have the right to update for 60 days without registering. I think we go nowhere here. Follow Tech’s advice, find the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log and please post it so we can help you!
What confuses me is, the reference to reinstalling ‘it’ and I don’t know if that refers to the old 4.8.1169 version or the clean install of the 4.8.1229.
So are you saying that the error still occurs with the latest version 4.8.1229 (you did download and install this version after the uninstall utility and reboot) ?
If so:
a) you didn’t answer my question about the Updates expiration date ?
b) did you enter the registration key in the 4.8.1229 version after install ?
c) check your
This topic is the same as yours (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=28244.0) and that was resolved by a clean reinstall (reply #10 in that post) and you seem to have jumped in to the reinstall without first using the windows add remove programs to uninstall 4.8.1169 as the first step.
So I don’t know if missing the first step might be at issue or not but the above questions may also reveal something.
