Hi. I successfully installed Avast Home v 4.6 on a Win2K SP4 machine. After doing a full system virus scan, I executed “Generate VRDB Now!” The icon shows the animated “i” for a couple of minutes then stops. When I open the user interface, the VRDB entry still reads “Not done yet.” I have tried this multiple times, and have rebooted.
I cannot locate anything in the Avast! log or the OS event logs that indicates that anything went wrong.
Before I installed Avast! I uninstalled Norton AntiVirus Pro 2002. I have since found some remnants of the program, which I remove as I find them. I mention this because I am somewhat suspicious that Norton is unwilling to let our relationship go.
I searched the topics pretty thoroughly before posting this question. I apologize in advance if I missed a post relevant to this problem. Thank you for your time.
Ahum, this is just a standard queestion.
As has been explained many times, the vrdb generating can take a long time.
It is not just done in a couple of minutes.
Thank you very much for the Symantec link (and for your speedy reply). I ran the executable.
I went back and modified my original post to clarify the behavior. The VRDB Generator icon animates for a couple of minutes and then stops. The computer has been on for about 24 hours since my last attempt to generate the VRDB and the user interface is still telling me that the VRDB is not done yet.
I’ll run the VRDB generator again after a reboot to test the theory that some Norton leftover was hosing it up.
Thank you for replying, and for welcoming me to the forums. Prior to running VRDB, I lowered logging to Debug, and set my monitor not to turn off (I don’t run a screensaver). Not touching the mouse or keyboard, I timed the VRDB tray icon “bouncing” for about 15 minutes, at which point it stopped. There was no hard drive activity. Opening the user interface, it still read “Not done yet”. There was nothing in the logs.
The only thing I can figure is that some process is interrupting VRDB generation. It’s on me to do some further troubleshooting, in the form of identifying and disabling processes.
MrPikes, why don’t you try to let VRDB running in the Screen Saver mode?
VRDB takes some time to finish, I won’t worry that much. The same as the desktop searchers (Google, MSN, Copernik) need some time to build the index 8)
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
Then check the interface again and see if it has recorded the VRDB scan, if not try it again.
