vrdb qestion

so i have this horrible virus on my computer. it brings popups to my screen about every 20 or 30 seconds. so i install avast. it cant seem to find the root of all this, but the vrdb does detect somthing before a popup comes up. witch is good cus i can send it to the chest before it comes up on my screen. only problem is the vrdb insists on making this huge play about it “ALARM!!! WARNING A VIRUS HAS BEEN DETECTED!!!” and that gets annoying. i was wondering if there is a way to set the vrdb to just automaticly send a virus to the cest without asking me?

thanks.

The vrdb it’s not the real time scanner, but a feature to repair a specific type of file from virus infestation, try to do a deep scan and remove all the malware.

You only have a limited option in the Home (free) version, to send the infected file to the virus Chest (silent mode, with general answer no, see below).
My own feeling on this is you should use the default interactive action. This way you know exactly what is going on with your system. If you are getting so many warnings, that you want to automate this process, I believe you should review your security practice - filter emails at source, delete from server rather than download them, review the sites they visit, etc.

See the avast help file, Resident Protection: Standard Shield Provider Settings - “Advanced” Page.
Click on Standard Shield and then on Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and select Silent Mode and the General answer No.

Leave the file in the chest for a few weeks (it can do no harm from there) to ensure no adverse effect from being moved to the chest. Then scan the file again in the chest to ensure it is still detected as infected and if so delete it from the chest.

You don’t say what type of scan it is you are doing when this occurs, on-access (resident) as the info above relates, or an on-demand scan, one you initiate using the Simple User Interface ?
The above information doesn’t work with on-demand scans. These automated options are only available in the Pro version. This is a limitation of the Home (free) version that it has interactive input requirement, there have to be differences in the Home/Pro version and this is one of them, the programmers have to eat ;D

On-demand scans:
In the Home version you can check the option “Don’t show this window again” when the first virus warning appears, select the “No action” button. This way, no action will be taken and you will given the results at the end of the scan (and you can perform actions from there). Over time this will become less of an issue, as the resident, on-access scanners are designed to intercept infection before it gets into your system.

There is likely to be some other elements which may be responsible for the generation of infected files.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.

  1. AVG anti-spyware (formerly Ewido) If using winXP. or a-Squared free if using win98/ME. Or SUPERantispyware Or Spyware Terminator

If a virus is replicant (coming and coming again), you should:

  1. Disable System Restore on Windows ME or Windows XP. System Restore cannot be disabled on Windows 9x and it’s not available in Windows 2k. After boot you can enable System Restore again after step 3).

  2. Clean your temporary files. You can use CleanUp or the Windows Advanced Care features for that.

  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot. Other option is scanning in SafeMode (repeatedly press F8 while booting).

  4. It will be good if you download, install, update and run AVG Antispyware. Some users recommend SUPERantispyware, Spyware Terminator and/or a-squared (take care about false positives).
If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.

  5. If you still detecting any strange behavior or even you’re sure you’re not clean, maybe it will be good to test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest AVG, Panda and/or F-Secure BlackLight.

  6. After you’re clean, use the immunization of SpywareBlaster or, which is better, the Windows Advanced Care features of spyware/adware cleaning and removal.

  7. Finally, when you’re clean, check for insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector to update insecure applications and avoid reinfection.

No, only in Professional version (see picture here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=13315.msg112285#msg112285).

In Home version you can check the option “Don’t show this window again” as soon as the first virus warning appears, and click on “No action” button. This way, nothing will be done and you will be presented the results at the end (and you can perform actions from there).
