Hi all.
WinXP sp2.
Minor bug:
With VRDB ‘merge with main avast icon’ enabled (two in one), when VRDB runs, it creates another separate tray icon (the main remains) briefly, instead of merging the active icons into one.
EG the VRDB tray icon appears leftmost in tray for 2 seconds, then dissappears for variable seconds then reappears.
With the icons split, the VRDB icon behaves properly.
This is a new behaviour on my system.
Cheers,
Alistair+
Hello,
Actually the merge option is used only when the creation of the VRDB is inative.
When it starts, it will create the second icon so it will show you that is being done.
You problaby asked to VRDb be done when computer is inative… So when its inative the VRDB will be done (showing the icon) and when you move the mouse or the computer starts to work on a proccess the VRDB will stop (hiding the icon).
Thanks for your time,
Elminster
Hi Alistair,
To expand on Elminster’s reply a little, the primary purpose of combining/merging the two icons is to save a little space in the toolbar (except when a fresh VRDB is being generated), and maybe more importantly to keep all the menu choices together in one place.
If you prefer to always have a separate VRDB icon showing, even when (most of the time) it’s not active, that’s certainly your choice.
Oh, and the part of your post I almost missed, about the disappearing-reappearing thing. The VRDB icon’s visible only when it’s actually working, so if (like many of us) you’re set to generate-when-idle, the VRDB icon will disappear temporarily if it pauses for keyboard/mouse activity. If you watch, typically it reappears (and generation continues) a few seconds after you’ve stopped using the keyboard and mouse.
OK, then my suggestion (IMHO) is that when the icons are merged, then they stay merged. For example, when VRDB is doing its thing it either cycles within the main icon, or takes over the main icon. This is very easy to do programatically, and stops the separate VRDB icon popping in and out when merged on the tray. I realise you can unmerge, but many folks have 20 or more tray items, so another that comes and goes is ;D whereas a properly merged one would be nice.
{you could say I am nitpicking; but Avast is 8) software, and feedback like this is usually useful to the end product}
Is there any way the VRDB which is supposed to store 3 versions back be tested in some way?
Ok, people, I have VRDB icon merged to, and the same problem anounced in the first email of this toppic. Strange is that I don’t have any applications open, I am absolutely away from my computer, and the “i” icon appears and desappears one or two seconds after it runs, all the time, and never stops. This is the 3rd day I’m waiting VRDB makes it’s work and it never finish.
Win 2K sp4 (BR-port) - avast version doesn’t show anymore (why this?) but I know it’s free edition.
As far I know there are two ‘i’ icons: a ‘fixed’ one (that you merged) and the one that appears when VRDB is being updated.
More details here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647
I’m not that sure what is happening… :-[
Hi, Tech. I saw your explanation in “more details” but this ini file changed a lot meantimes (see at the end of the text).
And… if you merge the VRDB, “i” only appears when VRDB is active. And this happens. I have the “a” normal, and each one or two seconds, “i” appears and disappears, despite I’m absolutely away from the computer.
After read your comments in avast.ini file, I changed the ODBC to XML, maybe this can help something.
and now, the lines:

Wetabax, let your [VRDB] section like this and test.
If it does not help, maybe manual start VRDB update…
I don’t think the storage (XML and ODBC will change much).
If you delete the file \Data\Integ\avast.int and generate VRDB, will it solve?

Ok, ok. Fiz o que vc pediu. Ooops. I’ve done what you suggest.
Now we must wait 2 weeks for new VRDB.
I will maintain you updated, ok?
regards and thanks.
wal.
PS - only for your concern: avast.int has (now had) 13.982.176 bytes…
2 weeks? Well correct me if I’m wrong but I read that the VRDB will need to update in three weeks, unless of course you’ve already waited one week.
… smart guy! 8)
Nope I’m still learning. When I first saw your post, it might confuse other members because they might heard that you should update your VRDB after three weeks, not two weeks.
Wetabax, you can run VRDB update manually at any time… just choose it on the menu 8)
