vrdb

k so i’ve had avast like 2 weeks now on my new laptop (hp vista 64bit) and i just realised the the ‘i’ icon is missing, so i explored around finally see the big bold writing on the splash screen saying vrdb ‘not done yet’. when i right click on the ‘a’ icon none of the vrdb options are there either.i tried repairing it, uninstalling/reinstalling and then i’ve spent like d past 3 hrs searching the net but to no avail. i didnt try all the complicated stuff cuz i might end up doing more harm than good.anyone has a simple soultion to suggest? its 2am i’m too frustrated to sleep and i hav a long day of classes ahead…gah!

:frowning: ??? :-\ :cry:

and you are sure, that there is no VRDB-line when you rightclick the a-icon? (picture)

do you use any other security software (antivirus, firewall, antispyware,…)?

(i too use avast, hp compaq, vista 64bit and have no problems)

You can manually run VRDB or (in Vista) set it to idle mode (it will generate VRDB each 21 days, default). But I won’t worry that much about VRDB. It protects against file infectors, not that very common nowadays.

nope no vrdb when i right clicked…how do i manually run it?
k i just accidentally stopped 2 providers how do i undo this?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If no joy, try this edit the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini file using notepad, [VRDB] section, adding the following line, ShowTaskbarIcon=1 save the changes, the avast self-defence module will ask for confirmation, answer Yes and exit.

Example:
[VRDB]
MergeIcons=0
Disabled=0
ShowTaskbarIcon=1

This will/should show the 'i ’ icon in the system tray, at that point I would suggest you merge the icons.

Right click the ‘i’ icon (if you have it) and run.
Or, right clikc the ‘a’ icon and choose VRDB > Generate now.
Or run ashdisp.exe and get the ‘a’ icon.

But it’s better focus on having avast working before (all providers).
