VRDB

What is the function of VRDB?

It is the Virus Recovery DataBase but it is obsolete now as new removal of new malware can not be used to recover these new infections.
It will not be in the new avast! V5.

What system will be used instead?

Well… there isn’t a recovery system for infected files, i.e., repair.
The best is prevention, not cure.
The better is have backups

But i was wondering if the file was like a file of Avast! or Malwarebytes… Or a picture that you had on your pc and a virus attacked it… So you will delete it ? :-\

You could always reinstall the software

Yeah its easy this thing but what you think if its a family picture that you was having on your pc and its really personal and u cant repair it because of a virus infected it ? So its would make you mad no ?

I will be mad but even if you have VRDB,you can’t repair the family picture since I think VRDB only make copies of important system file and no pictures

Do you think I need the VRDB to run or generate, it seems that my hard disk space becomes lower.

You can disable if you think it is slowing your computer down. This feature is going to be dropped in version 5 anyway

If I generate a VRDB is there any option to remove the files used when generating?

I don’t think so.

If you mean it takes up more space rather than slower, the VRDB doesn’t make copies of files (it isn’t like conventional backup), it makes information about the file to try and help repair it if it gets infected. It also doesn’t do this for every file, commonly only for executables. So it shouldn’t take up that much space.

If you do mean slower, I can’t see how as it only runs when a) you manually generate it or b) every three weeks, which is its run interval.

No, because it isn’t saving complete files as I mentioned above.

Does VRDB help my computer?

It is of less importance now than when it was first introduced. Today’s malware is much harder to clean because of encryption, etc. and from version 5.0 the VRDB will no longer be in avast.

But can we make a backup of computer and format the hard disks and use to backup to restore it?

You mean you aren’t already doing that ;D
– SYSTEM BACK-UP & RECOVERY
If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.
If you have a back-up and recovery plan, you can recover from anything in minutes, not hours or days.

  1. back-up all the things that you don’t want to lose, data files, like documents, spreadsheets, emails, email account details, registration keys, address book, favourites/bookmarks, downloaded files/programs, etc. the list goes on and on but if you don’t want to lose it back it up. There are many back-up programs that can simplify this task and run it every day.

  2. Recovery - re-installing your system really is a poor choice and one of last resort. There are tools (Drive Imaging software) that take exact images of your Partitions or Hard Disks and these images can be restored in minutes if you suffer a major catastrophe and that doesn’t have to be a virus attack.

I do a weekly image of my partitions and save them to my 2nd hard disk, they can also be saved to off-line storage, DVD, USB external hard disk, etc. as part of my weekly system maintenance.

So if the worst comes to the worst at most I lose:
A. 6 days worth of program updates or new installations, but with my daily back-up I can recover most of that.
B. less than one days data files, emails, etc.
None of these is a problem and much quicker than a system reinstall and I don’t have to go on-line to download the myriad of security updates needed to secure my system where there is a chance to get reinfected whilst my system has vulnerabilities because of these missing patches. Not to mention all my system tweaks and program settings are retained and I will have saved myself many hours of work and a huge amount of stress.

Many of these programs cost, there are some free ones, but it will take some research on your part to find these tools and decide on what is best for you from reviews, user feed back, etc. good luck.

If you suggest to make an image restore, how will I going to do this?

First you need to create the image… then restore it if necessary.
I suggest Easeus Partition Manager (if you don’t need to restore the system partition, as you will need a CD to do so and this CD can only be generated by the paid version). A very good option is Acronis Disk Director or, to just make image backups, Acronis Backup & Recovery. Both not-free.

any free software?
