I receive the following Avast warning and attempts to fix the problem remain unsolved.
WARNING
We have identified the following browser add-on, which has a bad reputation among Avast users.
DATA MANAGER
In a clickable box: REMOVE BAD ADD-ON
show details (by clicking it shows a trash can and you can click on a remove button).
I have followed the steps through until finish, but the warning box keeps coming back when I re-open the browser. My main browser is Firefox, version 30.0, and up to date. I run Windows 7, 64bit. Have done recent Avast and Malwarebytes scans.
Suggestions???
Try this
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
[*]Close all open programs and internet browsers.
[*]Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
[*]Click on Scan.
[*]After the scan is complete click on “Clean”
[*]Confirm each time with Ok.
[*]Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
[*]Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
[*]You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
I’m getting this too. Why should some software like AdwCleaner be downloaded if the issue is coming from the Avast software itself? For the past week, when I start my PC, a warning box from Avast pops up saying it has identified some bad add on in IE (Real Player downloader which I don’t have and don’t have any add ons either) so I chose ‘remove bad add on’ then another box pops up from Avast saying whenever an add on is removed I must choose what my homepage should be and it gives Yahoo as one of the 2 options. What is this crap?
Thank you both for responding. I agree with Nokomis, that it seems strange to download another program to clean this up. However, I did some things that may have fixed my problem.
In Firefox, I discovered a setting that may have caused this. Under tools>options>security, there is the check box that says “warn me when sites try to install add-ons”. I had this checked, but noticed an “exceptions” box. When I clicked on this I discovered 3 sites that were excepted from warning me. One of these had personals in the address, another marketplace…I deleted all these exceptions.
Then I re-did, scans of both Avast (nothing infected) and Malwarebytes. The latter found 3 infected items, 2 of which had the word “Data Manager” in them. I quarantined these & restarted. I’ve been on Firefox awhile now and have not had the warning pop-up. AdwCleaner may well have done the same thing. I preferred to use my existing programs. Essexboy, have you had good luck with AdwCleaner? My sense is that the free Avast is not sophisticated enough to clean up this problem. I’ll let you know if I learn more.
Thanks,
Tom
No the browser cleanup tool is not yet mature enough to take into account all possibilities
These are the exceptions I have in mine:
marketplace.firefox.com
getpersonas.com
addons.mozilla.org
As far as I know, they’ve been there for ever, don’t think these three are a risk.
I’ve never had any rogue add-on get installed in FF.
I’ve got the same 3 in mine – note to tomw, that’s personas (i.e., user profiles), not personals.
I deleted all of these but the addons.mozilla one. Will they come back if needed or have I disabled stuff I should not have disabled.
