I just got wind of this thread thanks to Google.
I work for Spyware Terminator and I felt the need to reply here.
Just want to say I read through the whole four pages.
First I wish to extend my appreciation to all of you for not ripping our software with the usual “spywarewarrior.com rogue listing” junk, or the sort. I see it all too often in these kinds of threads and it makes things very frustrating. For those unaware what I am speaking of, Spyware Terminator was listed on the SpywareWarrior.com rogue page for a period of 3 months (October to December of 2005) out of questions about Crawler, our company. The concerns were cleared up and Spyware Terminator was delisted. They never found anything wrong with the program.
Second, I want to point out that Spyware Terminator just arrived at 2.0 final today. It is out of beta. You can find the download link here: http://www.spywareterminator.com/dnl/landing.aspx (v2.0.0.187)
OK so anyway, I saw a user post concerns that Spyware Terminator taking up X gigabytes on the computer. This is a bug which has been in existence for a while now. However we addressed this bug and it should be fixed in our current FINAL version of 2.0 which I linked above. It should read correctly now in Add/Remove Programs in the range of 30MB or so. Spyware Terminator has never taken more than 1GB of space, let alone 100MB, let alone 50MB… :P.
I also saw a user say that Crawler Toolbar is spyware. The toolbar is not spyware.
It has TRUSTe certification, something which would be rescinded if the toolbar were to include practices known to be spyware related (data collection, computer spying, etc.). -http://www.truste.org/pvr.php?page=td_licensees
It was removed from McAfee’s database detection. It was removed from BleepingComputer.com’s list of malicious startup items. It is not detected by any major antispyware program.
Im not sure what else I can give you to prove it isnt spyware.
The practice of bundling a toolbar is not spyware either. Several programs bundle a toolbar, most of which are software titles you know and trust:
CCleaner (Yahoo Toolbar)
DivX (FireFox + Google Toolbar for FF)
Java (Google Toolbar)
Adobe Flash (Google Toolbar)
McAfee (SiteAdvisor)
CyberDefender (eSafe antispam toolbar)
Notice the last two, both of which are security products like Spyware Terminator. Also note that we dont brand it as “Crawler Toolbar”. We brand it as Web Security Guard, which is our other free security product. it is similar to, and more secure/private, than SiteAdvisor. Web Security Guard requires Crawler Toolbar as a foundation to operate.
The problem with the winlogon.exe file was a false positive, yes. However, it was removed within hours, and as other users said, only users using 2.0 beta were affected. Most of our users are using 1.9, and would have never experienced this.
One of the users in this forum was complaining that we are not AS on top of things as other products. I responded to the problem within 4 hours, and the user “Mimo” in that thread, who is one of the database analyzers, responded within 1.5 days reporting the issue was fixed.
Unfortunately if a user posts a problem after normal business Czech hours, it wont be handled until the next day as our development team is in the Czech Republic (I am in the US).
Sash in reply #40 brought up that Spyware Terminator was fooling around with the system files.
ST doesnt harm any system files. You might be confusing this with the HIPS system, which alerts you when another program attempts to use a system file.
