Spyware Terminator never brought anything good to my system. I can’t recall exactly, but I do remember it started messing with some system files and I got rid of it immediately. To play on a safe side, I restored my system backup image I created few days ago, so not a single trace of this utility has left inside. Running my system without it, and not having a single problem. There are some really good tools out there that can help getting rid of spyware, so really no need of having this tool installed. Of course, that’s MHO.

I honestly can't believe the mass hysteria about this program, if you don't like it just uninstall it.
it's been uninstalled for a long time...just didn't like their tech support telling me the problem was with my os not their crapware ??? ::) my semi-hysteria and posting on the matter is done :)

Some people wants to be moderator and they are free to do so. May I recall I was the first to get this Trojan Phoney winlogon affair back on tuesday and there was no data yet on the web on what to do with it. Plus the surprise, inexperience of newbies:that’s why I’m proud I posted here this thread because I know many Avast users (free program) use ST too (other free program). That’s not hysteria, I feel I don’t have to format or reinstall an image because of Spyware Terminator especially learning that even their quarantine feature with that Trojan wasn’t working so well! Now, of course, every body is free to keep and run whatever they want. But having read a thread like this a year ago, and with the knowledge of unwanted features (Crawler toolbar, etc…) I would never have installed Spyware Terminator on any computer at all… :-X

Nothing to do with wanting to moderate anything, simply my take on the matter, yes ST screwed you but you compounded the matter. Then you created another topic along the same lines for SuperAntiSpyware only to find that it was avira with a false positive.

I still maintain you wouldn’t have suffered in the way you did had you fully investigated ‘both’ of these WARNING topics. That is my personal opinion not one of a wannabe moderator.

Am i the only one have no prblems with ST. It runs fine and smoothly in my system. I don’t know, i don’t know…
I had problems with Webroot Spysweeper incompabilities and i did not thought SS was a crappy program, they solved the problems.
I donwnloaded ST alone, without Crawler bar, where do you download your programs? You can choose, ST alone or ST with crawler bar and something else.
I don’t know.
Security programs are no a toy, You must learn to use them, and when your AV o SP find a “possible infection” before delete or quarantine the file you must search and read, there a lot of security forums.

Well, I know there has been a few updates since tuesday, so they fortunately solved the problem. I must say that my ST at work (before I uninstalled it completely) didn’t report any Trojan or other problem. Even so. As I told you, it was on Monday night or Tuesday (my head hurts…!) and the things posted or investigated about Phoney (what a name?!) were too much a few and I wanted to act fast. That was my error and I promise it won’t reasonnably happen again but how long can you wait when you have a so-called “virus”:a day, two to get the full thing investigated… That’s a bit long for my temperament. If you want to have a mammoth that does nothing but being there and wrecking havroc, then be happy with it. I’d rather be without!

Oh, yes, I forgot to add I contacted their support via email 3 days ago and haven’t had any answer yet. ???

We are now on the fourth page discussing a users choice.
There are many other security programs which fall in the same category.
It really isn’t hard to decide. If you like it, keep it. If you don’t, un-install it.
The program isn’t spyware but the choice to have it on your computer is yours.

Sure, and I’m going to try RogueRemover ( http://www.snapfiles.com/get/rogueremover.html ) “to get rid of my fears”.

Hi George Yves,

And rightly so. You are behind this computer and you decide what you like to run on it. If a program or solution does not feel right for you, do not use it, and uninstall. If later on you see that you were right with your decision, so much the better. But I cannot agree with bob here that discussing these matters does not bring a thing. bob3160 does know what he likes, he is an experienced user, and became so here. But others might find a discussion like this very helpful. I for instance that never had Spyware Terminator running on a computer, will scratch my head twice before I decide to install it now. I also enjoyed knowing about FP’s and in which programs to expect them, twice bitten is twice shy, forearmed is forewarned. George Yves, no one is to critisize you about reporting here, they should be grateful!

polonus

thanks George Yves for that link…gonna download that program and try it…
polonus and many others know of some of the problems i’ve had of late and this is one that seems good to try

bob3160 does know what he likes, he is an experienced user, and became so here
how true and i feel like i have learn very much from this forum and all the help i have got and the friends i have made over the time i have been here on this forum ;)

gee bob-looks like page 5 is coming soon ;D

Taa-daa !!!

We’re almost entering the Page 5 ! ;D ;D ;D

Good old times when we used to joke a lot… to bad there is just few people who still understand them left in these forums.

Hey George Yves, I tried your link for ROGUE REMOVER but McAfee SITE ADVISOR is red in alert for viruses!!! >:(

That’s just SnapFiles link and it’s probably because they have so much junk there now…

Original link for RogueRemover is this:

http://www.malwarebytes.org

(this one is green, so no worries)

I’ve got shields from 3 (three) programmes to secure my Internet connections and downloads: Avast 4 Home, System Mechanic 6 Professional and Ad-Aware SE 2006 Professional. Neither of them turned on alarms when I was downloading RR from SnapFiles.

I just got wind of this thread thanks to Google.

I work for Spyware Terminator and I felt the need to reply here.

Just want to say I read through the whole four pages.

First I wish to extend my appreciation to all of you for not ripping our software with the usual “spywarewarrior.com rogue listing” junk, or the sort. I see it all too often in these kinds of threads and it makes things very frustrating. For those unaware what I am speaking of, Spyware Terminator was listed on the SpywareWarrior.com rogue page for a period of 3 months (October to December of 2005) out of questions about Crawler, our company. The concerns were cleared up and Spyware Terminator was delisted. They never found anything wrong with the program.

Second, I want to point out that Spyware Terminator just arrived at 2.0 final today. It is out of beta. You can find the download link here: http://www.spywareterminator.com/dnl/landing.aspx (v2.0.0.187)

OK so anyway, I saw a user post concerns that Spyware Terminator taking up X gigabytes on the computer. This is a bug which has been in existence for a while now. However we addressed this bug and it should be fixed in our current FINAL version of 2.0 which I linked above. It should read correctly now in Add/Remove Programs in the range of 30MB or so. Spyware Terminator has never taken more than 1GB of space, let alone 100MB, let alone 50MB… :P.

I also saw a user say that Crawler Toolbar is spyware. The toolbar is not spyware.
It has TRUSTe certification, something which would be rescinded if the toolbar were to include practices known to be spyware related (data collection, computer spying, etc.). -http://www.truste.org/pvr.php?page=td_licensees
It was removed from McAfee’s database detection. It was removed from BleepingComputer.com’s list of malicious startup items. It is not detected by any major antispyware program.
Im not sure what else I can give you to prove it isnt spyware.

The practice of bundling a toolbar is not spyware either. Several programs bundle a toolbar, most of which are software titles you know and trust:
CCleaner (Yahoo Toolbar)
DivX (FireFox + Google Toolbar for FF)
Java (Google Toolbar)
Adobe Flash (Google Toolbar)
McAfee (SiteAdvisor)
CyberDefender (eSafe antispam toolbar)

Notice the last two, both of which are security products like Spyware Terminator. Also note that we dont brand it as “Crawler Toolbar”. We brand it as Web Security Guard, which is our other free security product. it is similar to, and more secure/private, than SiteAdvisor. Web Security Guard requires Crawler Toolbar as a foundation to operate.

The problem with the winlogon.exe file was a false positive, yes. However, it was removed within hours, and as other users said, only users using 2.0 beta were affected. Most of our users are using 1.9, and would have never experienced this.
One of the users in this forum was complaining that we are not AS on top of things as other products. I responded to the problem within 4 hours, and the user “Mimo” in that thread, who is one of the database analyzers, responded within 1.5 days reporting the issue was fixed.
Unfortunately if a user posts a problem after normal business Czech hours, it wont be handled until the next day as our development team is in the Czech Republic (I am in the US).

Sash in reply #40 brought up that Spyware Terminator was fooling around with the system files.
ST doesnt harm any system files. You might be confusing this with the HIPS system, which alerts you when another program attempts to use a system file.

Hi Tokar,

Well we are here thanks to continued posting in this thread, and let us hope some good may come out of the efforts of thruthfinding and trying to to give a honest representation of the facts, the pro’s and con’s have been exchanged. A more in depth unbiased reporting of the facts cannot be found elsewhere I think, this forum should be hailed for this. So it is up to the individual user to weigh these facts. Anyway thanks for your reaction, the best representation is always found in this way. Good I encouraged George Yves to continue the thread.

polonus

Yeah if anyone has any questions, I will respond in a timely manner (im always available on the Spyware Terminator official forums, on a side note).

Hi Tokar I have one small question, I have just had a quick look at your site and wondered if you have a database that shows the files and registry entries that are dropped by the various malware. I would be interested in this as at times I have to remove the infections manually, usually when there is a zoo present and it prevents some tools from running or disables regedit, so I have to go in a different way
