Warnings and Error Messages...Please help

Hope I’m posting in the right board. Forgive me if I’m not.

I recently had a new high-speed cable service connected and now I can’t seem to update Avast. The tech had all kinds of trouble getting it to connect from the router. Don’t know what he did! I’ve had computer problems ever since. The little blue screen and talking guy never comes up anymore.

I’ve searched my logs and it hasn’t updated since 7/20/08.

Under Warnings, I get this message: Function SetifaceUpdate Package () has failed. Return code is 0x20000004, dwRes is 20000004.
But when I go to ‘About Avast’, it says, under VPS file, Compilation date: 7/24/08. I manually updated but it’s not showing in the log. I want to make sure I’m actually getting the updates.

How do I get it to update itself again and have the blue screen tell me? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you using the server version (as the board you’re posting)?
In the PC version, Program settings > Update (Basic) > Details, you can configure the warnings and, before, the automatic way to receive updates.
The automatic updates are logged into the Notice folder of avast Log Viewer.

I’m using the free home version. Sorry.

Anyway, you can check what I’ve posted before.

I checked and it’s already configured that way. Also, I don’t have the little ‘i’ icon in my tray. Isn’t that supposed to be there?

This may mean something…I keep getting Zone Alarm alerts that my computer is trying to communicate with port 2869. I never opened it. (just got new high-speed internet and maybe the new router is goofing something up?) I don’t use P2P. Can I disable it? Maybe that will stop the communications to the port?

Which is your operational system? Isn’t the icon hidden? Merged with the ‘a’ (see ‘a’ icon submenu VRDB).

I’m not an expert on these things…

You can disable P2P provider, but I really doubt it’s the one which is listening that port… maybe some other program. You can check with http://www.microsoft.com/brasil/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/TcpView.mspx

I’m using Windows XP. The little ‘i’ icon still isn’t there but right now my bigger problem is the program not updating automatically. Any other ideas why auto update isn’t working?

Should I post elsewhere…and what board would that be for free users? I don’t want to get yelled at. ;D

Thanks for any help.

I think your tech may have messed up Zone Alarm so that avast! can’t connect to the update server.

  1. Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
  2. Uninstall ZA, boot, install again.

Here ya go…Let me say that since the 17th, everything looks like this. TONS of entries on the same day. Before the 17th (before the tech installed high-speed internet) there weren’t as much on any given day.

Again…I’m no pro but…I noticed in ZA that these boxes are ‘not’ checked:

Allow outgoing DNS/DHCP in Trusted Zone on high security.
Allow outgoing DNS/DHCP in Internet Zone on high security.

Should they be checked to allow Avast to communicate and update automatically? What port do I need open for Avast to send me updates?

Problem solved!!! Thanks for everything! ;D

If you could say what you did to solve the problem, you never know it could help others in the future.

My proxy setting wasn’t correct. I did this:

Right click on Avast icon in tray
Click on Program Settings
Click on Update (connections)
Click on Proxy

And from there just clicked OK a couple of times. (I don’t want to go into it again cuz I don’t want to mess anything up.)

Hope this helps others. ;D

Thanks for the update.
