I get home, windows gives an error at initialization, loads up, then it says theres a new version of Avast available to download. I click download, and it occurs me that I may have a virus!!! =:O ZOMG I don’t restart, my windows locks up and I’m forced to restart. I’m totally freaked out.
No, I mean, there were not a program update today.
I suggest a boot time scanning with avast: Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot. Other option is scanning in SafeMode (repeatedly press F8 while booting).
I beg to differ from Tech’s confirmation. Whilst there was no program update today, you are still within the 7 day program update cycle of the last program update, designed to balance the load on the update servers.
I have v 4.7 Home Ed.
After an auto-program update yesterday, Apr 24, to Build Apr2007 [4.7.986],
Avast no longer shows “Schedule a boot time scan” as a selection.
Until now, Avast has worked very well for over 3 years.
After your reply this forum went down for me. And AVG Antispyware would get stuck on updating. But I think these were all just coincidences. I think I may have a memory or hardware problem here, I downloaded all scanners you posted and when they reach my second HD while scanning the computer freezes. But by then they scanned all important files and didn’t find anything. Again thanks a lot for your help guys, I really appreciate it.
I ran memtest for a day and it didn’t find any errors. I might need a tech head to help me out now.
Your question is unrelated to the topic or the text you quoted, so it may be better to put this in a topic of its own with a Title more appropriate, like Schedule Boot-Time scan option missing after Update.’
If this doesn’t quickly resolve it, that is what I suggest you do.
If you haven’t rebooted after the update, do so.
If no change, try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
After logging in and spending about 30 minutes looking for a way to post as a new topic, I’d given up., I had tried to post as a new topic. but it’s not there, or I can’t see the choice.
Just checked the Help page again: I DO see “Send this topic,” so my access isn’t totally restricted. Right now, I give up again on finding out why I can’t “create” a new post.
I’ve done your suggested repair while online, but “Scheduled a Boot time Scan” still doesn’t show. However, I haven’t rebooted.
An “Ah ha” experience: Is entering a new Subject appropriate, IF Title = Subject? I can’t see how to “start” a new Topic.
Apologies for inappropriate posting. I do not want to break rules. I’m just trapped. or
From the list of topics in the avast 4 Home/Pro Forum, at the top of the page you should see a New Topic button, see image.
Since the repair didn’t work, try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Strange because avast supports Windows 2k for boot time scanning and it’s present on the Home version… Does this situation occur even after boot? Are you using version 4.7.986?
Strange, the schedule boot-time scan has been accessed through the Menu (or right click in SUI skin) of the Simple User Interface (or Enhanced user Interface I assume) see image.
So I too am interested where the tools is that you mention, as far as I’m aware it has never been in the ‘program’ settings menu. It isn’t something that you use frequently so it would I guess be easy to forget.
Personally I feel it should also available from the avast system tray icon.
