Watch your online reputation!

More and more staff-managers will judge job-seekers on the basis of data that they can find on the respective candidates, as Microsoft have foud. The softwaregiant presented a report on online reputation because of ‘Data protection day’. In the States 70% of staff managers denied candidates a job because of their online reputation. In the UK that number is 41%, Germany and France only 16% and 14%. It is also a fact job-candidates do not care much about their online reputation to backfure on them.

Search engines
Staff-managers often use search engines and social networking sites to get to these data. The main reason to turn someone down is negative lifestyle and negative remarks, photo’s and other online info on the candidate. In some cases a positive online reputation just could get you the job in question, that is the other side of this medal. So one should pro-actively manage one’s online reputation, especially when you want your boss, friend or customer to find it, according to MS’s privacy strategists.

Hi Polonus…

And this is even legal? ::slight_smile:

God bless

Hi ardvark,

You may not like it, but it is what happens and a fact of life now. See: http://vodpod.com/watch/2865235-how-to-protect-your-online-reputation
Like it or not, social networking sites and blogs are making the private all the more public. You may have a smaller digital footprint than Jimmy Wales, but negative comments can spread quickly beyond your personal network to damage your life and your career. It’s your reputation. Better to be in control,

And this is even legal?
Why wouldn't or shouldn't it be legal? After all, if you posted it, you should be held responsible for it. Before you press that send or post button, think of the ultimate consequences of your post.

I hope mine is not that much bad… :-\

This is especially important (I think) for people of my age…just finishing school…I was told by careers advisors that employers regularly use these techniques like searching for their names to get an Impression of them if they can…it can decide your future for you really…

Another one we are told is to have a sensible email address, you can imagine the ones that some students migh have…

Hi Bob…

I also believe in forgiveness and second chances.

Hi ardvark,

You know how it should be and how it functions in the real world those are two different things. Meek is translated as weak, the public in general is has become preconditioned to look at issues like the majority thinks it should . Not everyone is open-minded and considerate, they often take little risks and also not taking risks is the easy way out and also they do not think of the aftermath of what they do to others. You know “the law has to be fulfilled to the last little jota”. So do unto others what you like them to do to you. All that you falsely bestow on others will eventually return unto your own head, no exemptions. But hordes and hordes of people haven’t found these valuable insights. But one should not termpt others in order that they would forgive you, so have a practical attitude here, and manage your online reputation…

Hi Polonus…

I think what I said has been misinterpreted. I did not say what I did to Bob to justify any misdeeds (or future misdeeds) on my part. I just meant that if someone who is, say, 30 years old goes looking for a job and employer looks at something that he/she posted online at 18 but has grown considerable and no longer holds or believes in what the wrote (or did,) then that needs to be taken into consideration and an opportunity given. But I suspect that’s not usually the case with the employers you have mentioned.

@Yokenny: Amen to your quotation of Scripture

God bless

This is the real world:
