Web history filled with tons of random webpages

Recently had this issue pop up. First noticed it because the computer was responding very slowly. Task manager showed an instance of explorer.exe using upwards of 4gb of ram! Tried to clean it myself with mbam last week; it was fine until today. Same slowdown happened, webpages are back in history. Seeking professional help this time. Attached are my logs.

Thanks in advance!

Not a great deal showing at the moment, let me know if this makes a difference. If not I will look deeper

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Here is the new log.

The computer seems to be running fine right now; no random webpages in history.

Is it possible that a webpage that I did have open was somehow running a clicker and going to all those other sites? I know I was viewing www.icy-veins.com the most recent time I noticed it slow down.

That is a possibility as no matter how often you visit a site and think that it is clean, it only takes a few seconds for a poisoned ad to get in and start clicking away.

Could you monitor it for a day or so and when you are happy let me know and I will tidy up

Everything seems good so far. I’ll keep a closer eye on some of the websites I visit in the future.

In that case methinks I will send you on your merry way

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Note that there is a space between " ComboFix " and " /Uninstall " .

Then click OK (or press Enter ).
Wait for the uninstall process to complete.

Remove tools

Download and run Delfix

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

If you do need to keep Java then download JavaRa
Run the programme and select Remove Java Runtime. Uninstall all versions of Java present
Once done then run it again and select Update Java runtime > Download and install Latest version

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

click the very large Download button.
click Save
Click Open folder
Right click on the Unchecky_setup and choose to Run as Administrator
Once open click the Install button.
Then click on Finish
Unchecky is now installed and will help you keep unwanted check boxes unchecked, this is a fire and forget programme

Thanks for all the help clearing up my problem unfortunately, I’m sad to report the problem seems to be back already, albeit in a slightly different form.

I noticed my computer slow down today while trying to play some Diablo III. Naturally my first thought was to check my web history, but it didn’t show anything out of the ordinary. I decided to loot at the task manager to see what was using up all my system resources, and I discovered 8-12 processes with a gibberish name, each with a description of “Google Chrome”. Since I don’t even have Chrome installed I instantly knew something was wrong. I tried opening the file location (somewhere in AppData) and deleting what was there, but most of the files said they were “in use by Chrome” and couldn’t be deleted. I decided to just play it safe and start the whole scan process over again. With that said, here are my new logs. Note that after I ran MBAM and restarted, the Chrome processes have not reappeared in the task manager. Thanks again!

Unfortunately MBAM does not give a time frame for when that folder installed. Did you download a programme or update a programme prior to this. It appears to be gtk which is a graphics programme for Linux ?

No new installs or updates, other than letting Steam update a few games as normal.

I did do some quick research, and it appears my fears about the website www.icy-veins.com were correct. According to the posts at http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/15142254554 it appears that visiting the site back in November resulted in some people getting the same Trojan.clicker that I have now. Whether I’ve had it since then or got it more recently I can’t say. I’ve been visiting that site for years, but it looks like I won’t be using it anymore now!

Anyway, here is the requested log file.

Intriguing that also installed a bits job. How is the computer now ?

It seems to be running fine right now. I don’t see any suspicious processes running in the task manager. Hopefully that means the Trojan has been completely removed from my system, and as long as I don’t go to that webpage hopefully it won’t come back.

Aye, I would recommend leaving it for a bit
