Web problem with Vista and Avast 5

I installed the latest avast onto a friends computer (vista sp1) and experienced a problem.

Near the end of the install process an error message came up saying that “connection failed, unable to connect to server”. Installation completed but there was no web access (IE8).

I uninstalled and web access returned.

I reinstalled, but the same error message was seen and web access went again.

I uninstalled again, but web access didn’t return.

My friend is not too happy and I’d like to get his computer working again.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Colin.

Avast Free or AIS?

How about trying the Avast removal tool in safe mode, see if that gets the internet working again.

What A/V product was on this computer before installing avast?

What firewall is used on this computer if any?

It is the free version.

There was a trial version of Norton IS that was removed by someone else.

No firewall other than the Vista one.

I’ll look at removal in safe mode.

Cheers,

Colin.

Norton leaves behind many of it’s traces. You may try the Norton Uninstall Utility.

Yes, you can obtain Norton’s removal tool from here: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Then let us know if it works again. If not, you may need to repair avast from add/remove programs after the Norton removal.

I’d say: you MUST use the norton cleaner. http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/ find it here.
