Web Scanner blocked from listening to port TCP: 12080

Hi all,

I’m using Zone Alarm (free) together with avast! 4.7 Home Edition, and have noticed that when I open ZA and place my cursor over the avast! web scanner icon at the top, it says: “Avast! web scanner Blocked from listening to port(s): TCP: 12080”.

Does that mean that ZA is preventing WebShield from functioning correctly?

On the following page

http://www.avast.com/eng/webshield_issues.html

I’ve read this:

“For the correct operation the Web Shield process (ashWebSv.exe or aswWebSv.exe) needs a permission to access the Internet (TCP port 80) and a permission to act as a server and accept incoming connections from localhost (the local machine) on TCP port 12080.”

Now, I’ve given avast! Web Scanner both access and server permission in ZA, but the problem persists.

I have also found the following (unresolved) thread that mentions this same issue:

http://forums.phoenixlabs.org/archive/index.php?t-10006.html

Oh, and I have also followed the procedure recommended here on this forum to edit the avast4.ini file, to allow WebShield to serve as transparent proxy, but this seems to have had no effect on the problem I’m describing.

If I’ve missed something obvious, please bear with me; I’m a newbie

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It certainly looks like it.

Does ZA allow permission for ashWebSv.exe (web shield) ?

  • if not allow it - if it does have an entry for it and it is allowed, delete the entry and allow ZA to ask permission when you connect, and ensure you allow ashWebSv.exe access.

What OS are you using?
If you have win98 or ME you need to configure your browser as explained on that ‘WebShield issues’ page.
FAQ 3 or 4…

thanks for the tip, DavidR. Done that, and it works fine now.

It’s windows xp, but it’s fine now.

No problem, welcome to the forums.
