The process is necessary for the Web Shield, even on Win9x.
How exactly did you do the “memory-check”? (whatever it is)
Do you use any firewall? What CPU/memory do you have?
Edit: of course I meant Web Shield, donno why I wrote “Standard Shield”… too many shields around

Why would ashWebSv.exe be necessary for Standard Shield? It’s the implementation of the Web Shield?
Have you set up the web shield in your browser? If not, please see the instructions in the avast help file (in the Resident Protection chapter).
Didn’t set up the web shield in my browser. Didn’t knew the feature since I checked the running processes. In fact, I didn’t had the time to configure it right now, must be done this evening at home.
