I just downloaded the newest update 5.1.889. Everything was working just fine but after the reboot. When I open any web browser (IE,Chrome,Firefox) and browse to any HTTP site like http://google.com nothing is displayed. When I browse to a https://mail.google.com it loads up just fine.
When I go into Avast and disable the web shield every http web page loads just fine. Why is the web shield stopping all pages?
I use the standard Windows 7 firewall. I did not see any listing for avastSvc.exe in the firewall rules so i created one for inbound and outbound. That did not help. I completely disabled the Windows firewall and still had the same problem. The problem only goes away when I stop the web shield service.
After rebooting my macine again everything seems to be working just fine. I am guessing when I used CCleaner it removed the temp folder or AVAST folder. On the restart AVAST recreated that folder.
Everything is A ok now.
Thanks for your help
Brendon
I’m having this same problem: Please let me know if I should start my own thread and I’ll do it.
Here’s a ton of info for you:
Avast! version: v5 free
Engine and definitions: 110119-0
Program: 5.1.889
PROBLEM:
When using the System Tray Avast control, “Avast Shields Control: Disable for XXX”, everything is fine until the “disabled” time limit is reached - usually I “disable” all shields 10 minutes. When the time limit is reached and Avast shields are automatically re-enabled, I lose all HTTP connectivity. I can ping any web site, but I cannot visit any web site at all.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far to narrow the problem down:
Checked for Avast updates and everything was up to date already.
I recently upgraded from a previous well-maintained free version: Sorry I don’t have the version, maybe v4.8? The previous version never exhibited this problem, ever.
One reason I upgraded Avast to v5 was to get the function of pausing the real-time shields from the system tray icon all at once (why is this feature not in the v5 interface?), rather than disabling them one at a time like I had to do in the previous version.
All Web shield and other shield settings are “default”, no changes.
Changed every Expert Setting one at a time in Web Shield, re-enabled the Web Shield, and then refreshed a blocked/dead web page. This always resulted in failure. Disabling the shield and refreshing a web page immediately works.
TEMP and TMP User Variables were both set to %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp, which already exists.
TEMP and TMP System Variables were both set to %SystemRoot%\TEMP, which already exists.
Even C:\TEMP exists, but it is not used
Clearing all 3 TEMP folders of all deletable files had no effect.
PC requires a reboot to re-establish a working Web Shield that allows HTTP access, until I suspend all shields from the system tray and Web Shield is re-enabled.
OS: WinXP/32 SP3
No service/hotfix releases installed within the problem time-frame.
Firewall: ZoneAlarm (Free) v7.0.483.000
This version of ZoneAlarm does not include “privacy” features that might conflict with Avast as mentioned in the Avast FAQ, and ZoneAlarm AntiVirus is not installed.
Disabling ZoneAlarm has no effect. This version of ZoneAlarm NEVER had a conflict with the previous version of Avast.
I have no other anti-virus or firewall software installed. These two apps are the only ones ever installed in this WinXP OS.
Hope that’s enough info I can get more, but since I entered all of this, someone will come in and suggest a tweak that will solve the problem, no doubt.
